Donizetti Opera Festival 2022 Bergamo
"Make way for young people" in the eighth edition of the festival, three operatic titles on the bill, a new creation, concerts and collateral activities
It will take place in Bergamo from 17 November to 4 December 2022 L'eighth edition of the Donizetti Opera Festival, organized by Donizetti Theater Foundation with the artistic direction of Francesco Micheli and the musical one of Riccardo Frizza.

Three Donizetti operatic titles on the bill, Favorite it, I fly you into embarrassment, Chiara and Serafina in the first modern representation, the new creation LU OpeRave and a series of concert events and collateral activities that will be announced in the coming months.

Among the performers there are several names of international resonance such as Javier Camarena, Alessandro Corbelli, Alex Esposito, Pietro Spagnoli and Annalisa Stroppa, but there will also be room for emerging voices from the Donizetti workshop andTeatro alla Scala Academy.

They will go up on the podium, next to the musical director Riccardo Frizza, Vincenzo Milletarì is Sesto Quatrini, while the direction will be signed by Valentina Carrasco, Gianluca Falaschi and the artistic director Francis Micheli.

"Make way for young people”Could be the motto of the Donizetti Opera Festival 2022, since it is on the relationship between young people and adults, between parents and children that the titles on the bill are focused, as well as the relationships between teachers and students, veterans and beginners that characterize the productions.

The Donizetti Opera Festival 2022, divided into three weekends, yes inaugurates the November 17 (replies on November 24 and 1 December) with the novelty  LU OpeRave, an experimental project in which electronics and current trends meet Donizetti's music. The title recalls the masterpiece Lucia di Lammermoor, source of inspiration for the new creation, which takes its inspiration from Mixopera vol. 1, electronic EP released in 2021 with the participation of some musicians gathered around the Fluidostudio label such as Protopope, the romantic, HER. They sign the booklet i Love freaks, direction and choreography are by Mattia Agatiello who brings his on stage Vittadini Farm; in the vocal cast, David Blanke and the soprano Laura Ulloa. LU OpeRave will debut in an evocative and unconventional city space that will only be revealed in the coming months.

Then follow the three opera productions dedicated to Gaetano Donizetti: Favorite it (1840), French grand-opéra of the composer's maturity, made his debut at Donizetti Theater the November 18 (reruns November 27, December 3).

The new staging of Valentina Carrasco, co-produced with the Opéra National de Bordeaux, uses the sets of Carles Berga is Peter van Praet (also lighting designer), of the costumes of Silvia Aymonino and choreography by Massimiliano Volpini. On the podium, the music director of the festival Riccardo Frizza, at the helm ofDonizetti Opera Orchestra, in the cast Annalisa Stroppa (Léonor), Javier Camarena (Fernand), Florian Sempey (Alphonse XI), and again Evgeny Stavinsky (Barthazar), Edoardo Milletti (Don Gaspar) e Caterina Di Tuna (Inès). The work will be presented in the critical edition edited by Rebecca Harris-Warrick, published by Ricordi with the collaboration and contribution of the Municipality of Bergamo and the Donizetti Theater Foundation.

The November 20 (replies on November 26 is 2 December), still al Donizetti Theater, will go on stage I fly you into embarrassment, playful melodrama performed at the Teatro Valle in Rome in 1824, one of the first great successes of the young Donizetti. The work, presented in the new critical edition of Maria Chiara Bertieri, is entrusted to Donizetti workshop, international workshop for young singers directed by Alex Esposito, also starring in the cast along with the charismatic Alessandro Corbelli.

The artistic director of the festival signs the direction Francesco Micheli, with scenes from Mauro Tinti, the costumes of Giada Masi, the dramaturgy of Alberto Mattioli. L'Donizetti Opera Orchestra it will be directed by the young man Vincenzo Milletarì, while the Festival Choir begins under the authoritative guidance of Bruno Casoni, historical director of the Coro della Scala and one of the major Italian masters.

To the Social Theater the November 19 (reruns November 25, December 4th) the rediscovery of the 2022 festival: Chiara and Serafina or The pirate, the opera of Donizetti's (not happy) debut at the Teatro alla Scala in 1822, then never again represented. The Donizetti Opera Festival proposes it again as part of the project #Donizetti200 in a new production made with theTeatro alla Scala Academy, whose students of the advanced courses will form the singing company and the choir, the latter directed by Except Sgrò. In the part of Don Meschino, Pietro Spagnoli, teacher of the specialization courses of the same Milanese institution. Directs Sesto Quatrini, at the helm oforchestra The Originals which continues the exploration of the Donizetti repertoire on period instruments. Direction, sets and costumes are by Gianluca Falaschi, the dramaturgy of Mattia Palma. A series of activities for the schools of Bergamo and its surroundings will also be linked to this title.

The fundamental contribution of the scientific section of the Donizetti Theater Foundation, directed by Paolo Fabbri, both in the drafting of the festival program and in the choice of editions or in their philological reconstruction.

The now traditional preview of the Donizetti Opera Festival is the Donizetti Revolution, curated by the artistic director Francesco Micheli with the dramaturgical collaboration of Alberto Mattioli. Scheduled at Donizetti Theater the April 6 with the mezzo-soprano Annalisa Stroppa, the pianist Hana Lee and other surprise guests, the evening will also present some video contributions made by students of various high schools in the Bergamo area during the school-work alternation period, followed by the didactic team of the festival as part of the Integrated Culture Plan of the Lombardy Region. The event will also be attended by a group of 40 students, who will play a significant role within the event.
