The International Opera Singing Competition dedicated to the Sicilian tenor Giuseppe Di Stefano, one of the most important initiatives of July Musicale Trapanese: the XVII edition will take place at Trapani from 31 March to 3 April 2022. The Contest is open to young opera singers under 35 of all nationalities, and it will be possible to register until March 25, 2022 to submit applications for participation. The announcement is available on the Competition website www.concorsogiuseppedistefano.it.

Strongly desired by the artistic director Matteo Beltrami and fromAdministration of the City of Trapani, after a suspension of over ten years, the Competition was relaunched in 2021, for the centenary of the birth of the famous tenor. A symbolic date that marked the new beginning of the opera competition, one of the best known on the international scene: chaired by Di Stefano himself from 1994 until 2004, it launched the international careers of singers such as the Greek soprano Dimitra Theodossiou (one of the winners of the second edition of 1995), the tenor Antonino Siragusa (1996 edition) and the baritone Nicola Alaimo (1997 edition). But also the mezzo-soprano Chiara Amarù, the tenors Paolo Fanale and Leonardo Cortellazzi, the bass Luca Tittoto, are among the singers who participated in the competition.

The XVII edition of the Opera competition Giuseppe Di Stefano yes will be divided into three phases: thepreliminary round in the days March 31 and April 1; then the semifinal the April 2 and the the final - to which a maximum of ten competitors can access - the 3rd April with a concert open to the public. The first three classified will receive a cash prize and the winner will be hired for a production of the 2023 Season of the Ente Luglio Musicale Trapanese. New in the 17th edition is the section "Crystal voice”, Reserved for falsettists and countertenors, who will be able to present three pieces chosen from the repertoire of the English tradition of songs, from the sixteenth century to the compositions of Henry Purcell. For this category there will be the elimination phase on the 2nd and the final on the 3rd of April: the winner will be hired for a concert within the 2023 Season of the Musical July.

Sara Hein Mulders, superintendent of the Aalto Musiktheater in Essen and the Cologne Opera, to preside over the Jury of this edition, composed of Michael Barobeck (artistic director of the Graz Opera), Sebastian Schwartz (artistic director of the Teatro Regio di Torino and of the Valle d'Itria Festival), Cecilia Gasdia (superintendent of the Arena di Verona Foundation), Ilias Tzempetonidis is Alessandro Di Gloria (respectively casting manager of the San Carlo Theater of Naples and of the Massimo Theater of Palermo), from Gianna Fratta artistic director of the Sicilian Symphonic Orchestra Foundation and by agents Andrea De Amici (In art Antonio Spagnuolo (Allegorical). The expert on countertenor voices will also be part of the jury Alessandro Mormile, music critic.

They will also be awarded several special awards, which highlight the support for the Competition and the interest on the part of associations and institutions in promoting study and training opportunities for young artists. The Jury of this section will be formed by Sabina Braschi, representative of the Kiwanis International club, Rachel O'Brien, artistic director of the Salvatore Licitra Opera Competition, Manuela Ranno, musical director of the Luglio Musicale Trapanese and representative of the Silvia smile association.

  • First Prize € 2,500.00 and writing within the 2023 season of the Ente Luglio Musicale Trapanese

  • Second Prize € 1.500

  • Third Prize € 1.000

Special awards

  • Francesco Braschi Award, € 1,000 offered by Kiwanis Club Trapani

  • Silvia Carrubba Award, scholarship for a maximum value of € 1,000

  • Amici della Musica di Alcamo Award, paid concert offered to the two best Sicilian artists (a man and a woman) chosen from among the finalists

  • Chiara Magni Award - City of Penne, scholarship worth € 250 for participation in a concert included in the 2022/2023 season offered by the APS Music and Culture Association

  • Equivoci Musicali Prize, paid concert offered by the Equivoci Musicali association of Milan
