In the unique setting of Olympic Theater come back on Vicenza Opera Festival: the VI edition of the review conceived and directed by Iván Fischer and organized with the Society of the Quartet of Vicenza It will take place from 26 to 29 October 2023, maintaining its successful format which includes an opera production accompanied by a symphony concert.

The program

This year the Hungarian Maestro will bring the lyrical drama to the stage of the "most beautiful theater in the world". Pelléas et Mélisande, that Claude Debussy finished in 1902 setting the homonymous text to music Maurice Maeterlinck. The work debuted at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in April of the same year and is considered a milestone of twentieth-century opera theater for its strong innovative and in some ways revolutionary contents.

Three performances are scheduled, Thursday 26, Friday 27 and Sunday 29 October 2023 (7pm), with Iván Fischer engaged once again in the double role of director, leading the Budapest Festival Orchestra and with Marco Gandini, director. The voice cast is notable, with the tenor Bernard Richter and the multifaceted soprano Patricia Petibon in the title roles. Tassis Christoyannis it will be Golaud, the bass Nicolas Testé will play the role of King Arkël, while Yvonne Naef is Peter Harvey they will be Geneviève and a doctor respectively. The twelve year old Oliver Michael, a music student at Trinity School in South London, will play the role of young Yniold, Golaud's son from his first marriage. The sets, however, are Italian, designed by Andrea Tocchio, which recreate an evocative forest on the stage of the Palladian theatre, and the costumes, designed by Anna Biagiotti.

The installation, which was very successful last June at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, is a production by Iván Fischer Opera Company with Society of the Quartet of Vicenza, Müpa Budapest, Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds and is created with the collaboration of Municipality of Vicenza.

The program of the Vicenza Opera Festival is completed by the usual symphony event on the calendar Saturday 28 October 2023 always at Olympic Theatre. Directed by Iván Fischer, the Budapest Festival Orchestra this year it offers a particular themed concert entitled "Music Degenerate", or the music banned by the Third Reich. The program includes pieces by composers who were ostracized by the Nazi regime, such as Hanns Eisler, Paul Hindemith, Erwin Schulhoff is Kurt Weill. The Budapest Festival Orchestra will be supported by the violist Maxim Rysanov (in the Hindemith Concerto) and by the voice of Nora Fischer in the final part dedicated to Kurt Weill.

The concert by the Budapest Festival Orchestra reaffirms the strong social commitment of maestro Fischer, an artist who, through the universal language of music, tries to convey profound messages to the public that speak of inclusion, coexistence and solidarity. Examples of this are concerts in abandoned places of worship, events dedicated to the new generations and the elderly, musical shows dedicated to children with autism and their families. In line with this philosophy, during the Vicenza Opera Festival the instrumentalists of the Budapest Festival Orchestra will perform in some retirement homes in the city for elderly guests, their families and staff.

There is more

The Olympic Theater designed by Andrea Palladio, a unique treasure chest in the world, with its fixed scenes requires a very particular setup that must be designed specifically for this extraordinary place. As Iván Fischer underlines, “while in all the opera houses of the world the music is the same, but with each production the scenery changes, here the scenery remains a constant element and it is the music and the scenic action that have to do the difference. This is all fascinating.”
