Vicenza Opera Festival 2022
For the fifth edition of the review, Iván Fischer returns to the Olympic Theater with Britten's The Turn of the Screw
Back on Vicenza Opera Festival: takes place from 21 to 23 October 2022 in the unique scenario in the world of Olympic Theater by Andrea Palladio the 5th edition of the review, presented by the Hungarian Maestro Iván Fischer and from Society of the Quartet of Vicenza.

Keeping the usual format, the Vicenza Opera Festival proposes an opera staging flanked by a symphonic concert: this year, turning the page compared to previous editions, a modern title was chosen, The Turn of the Screw (The turn of the screw), a masterpiece by Benjamin Britten.

The work, commissioned by the Venice Biennale, made its debut at the Teatro La Fenice in 1954, and is inspired by the homonymous story by Henry James, Gothic short story revolving around a governess and the two orphans entrusted to her in a remote mansion in the English countryside, children possessed by the souls of two wicked deceased individuals.

To interpret The Turn of the Screw on the stage of the Olympic Theater, the Vicenza Opera Festival called singers of great experience: Andrew Staples, Quint, Miah Persson, The Housekeeper, Laura Aikin, Mrs Grose, Allison Cook, Miss Jessel; in the roles of the two children Miles and Flora, Ben Fletcher is Lucy Barlow. The direction is supervised by the same Iván Fischer - also on the podium at the helm of the Budapest Festival Orchestra - in collaboration with Marco Gandini.

The staging, which inaugurates the Vicenza Opera Festival, will be staged on Friday October 21 (7.30 pm), with repetition Sunday 23, always at 19.30.

Saturday October 22, on the same stage, the two operatic representations will be interspersed with the symphonic concert of the Budapest Festival Orchestra. The Hungarian team, led by its founder Iván Fischer, performs the Concerto for cello and orchestra n. 1 in C major of Joseph Haydn, with the soloist participation of the Franco-German virtuoso Nicolas Altstaedt, and the Symphony n. 3 in E flat major "Eroica" of Beethoven.

In addition, during the days of the Festival the musicians of the Budapest Festival Orchestra will bring their music to some retirement homes and to the hospital of Vicenza, thus continuing a one started in the past editions of the festival.

There is more

The precious casket of the Olympic Theater with its fixed scenes leads to a very particular setting, which must be specially designed for this unique place in the world. As Maestro Iván Fischer points out, “While in all opera houses in the world the music is the same, but with each production the scenery changes, here the scenery remains a constant element and it is the music and the stage action that must make the difference. All this is fascinating. "
