Organized by: Arena di Verona Foundation

Arena di Verona Foundation Presents

After opening with Carmen (June 17) on 99. Arena di Verona Opera Festival completes the inaugural weekend by staging the traditionalAida of Giuseppe Verdi. The first opera to be staged in the Veronese Amphitheater in 1913, since then it has been the most popular title in the Arenian seasons and the most loved by audiences all over the world.

Saturday June 18 the Arena will host the before from the eleven performances scheduled for this season until 4 September, official closing date of the Arena Opera Festival 2022.

Continuing in the homage to Franco Zeffirelli started with Carmen, Aida also bears the signature of the great director and set designer: the Verdi masterpiece is in fact proposed in the staging imagined by Zeffirelli for the Verona Arena exactly twenty years ago, with the resumption of costumes by Anna Years and original choreographies by Vladimir Vasiliev. A golden Egypt, punctuated by precious multicolored fabrics, in an aesthetically dazzling vision that perfectly restores the double soul of the work, in balance between intimacy and grandeur.

"Solemnity and exoticism, triumph and tearing drama, a touching story of love and jealousy, of revenge and repentance, condemnation to war and injustice: all this - explains the presentation of the Arena Foundation - coexists in Verdi's superb score."

Commissioned by Chedivè of Egypt Isma'il Pasha, the original subject of Aida it is due to the famous Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, founder of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The work debuted at Khedivial Theater of Cairo the December 24, 1871, the first European performance, supervised by Verdi himself, was given shortly after, theFebruary 8, 1872 at the Milan staircase. Aida had begun her triumphal journey.

He returns to direct it to Verona Daniel Oren, who after the first three performances will alternate on the podium with the Music Director of the Arena Opera Festival Marco Armiliato.

Numerous interpreters will take turns on the grandiose stage of the Arena in the eleven performances of Aida: the most acclaimed artists of the international scene will converge on Verona, many of them at the debut of the role in the Amphitheater, flanked by the best young emerging talents.

The cast of the premiere sees the Arena debut of the acclaimed Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska in the title role, flanked by the tenor Murat Karahan like Radamès and from mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk like Amneris. The legendary bass Ferruccio Furlanetto will be the high priest Ramfis, alongside the rookies Sava Vemić (Re) e Roman Burdenko (Amonasro), Francesca Maionchi (Priestess) and to the Messenger of Carlo Bosi.

Following, to name just a few of the singers, a stellar name like Anna Netrebko (protagonist in the performances of 8, 16 and 28 July), Latonia Moore, Yusif Eyvazov, Fabio Sartori, Olesya Petrova, Anna Maria Chiuri, Gűnther Groissbőck, Michele Pertusi, Ambrogio Maestri, Amartuvshin Enkhbat… each evening will have the prestige and artistic value of a real premiere.

In addition toOrchestra, to the Choir prepared by Ulysses Trabacchin and ai Technicians of the Arena di Verona Foundation, on stage they will return hundreds of mimes and extras and especially the Dance coordinated by Gaetano Petrosino with the participation of international étoiles Ekaterina Olenyk, Fernando Montano is Ana Sophia Scheller in the role of Akmen, a role conceived by Zeffirelli in 2002 specifically for Carla Fracci, the guiding spirit who accompanies the protagonists of the opera along the fateful events that await them.
