Written in 1878, the piece is one of the most famous and beloved concertos in the entire violin literature, the only one that Tchaikovsky dedicated to this instrument. Characterized by overwhelming lyricism, it is full of splendid virtuosic passages of extraordinary difficulty.

The second part of the program presents the Symphony no. 6 in B minor op. 54 of Dmitri Shostakovich, written in 1939. Originally conceived as a piece dedicated to Lenin, a monumental composition for soloists, choir and orchestra based on Mayakovsky's poem of the same name, the “Sixth” materialized in a completely different form, and very different from Shostakovich's previous symphonies : a piece of small dimensions, just thirty minutes, and in just three movements, where the poetic discourse is made of immediate suggestions, and in which the tragic and the grotesque are juxtaposed.
