On 3 and 11 September 2026, at 9.00 pm, the Verona Arena presents Turandot of Giacomo Puccini in the staging with direction and scenes by Franco Zeffirelli and costumes by Emi Wada. In the role of the princess is engaged Anna Pirozzi, flanked by Maria Agresta like Liu e Michele Pertusi like Timur. On the podium they alternate Andrew Battistoni, September 3, and Francesco Ivan Ciampa, September 11th.
Turandot, last work of Giacomo Puccini, on a booklet by Giuseppe Adami is Renato Simoni, returns to the Verona amphitheater in the centenary year of its premiere. The action, set in a fairytale Beijing, revolves around the princess who subjects her suitors to three deadly riddles and the arrival of Calaf, determined to face the test.
The setting of Franco Zeffirelli constructs the story through a large-scale stage design, conceived for the monumental space of the Arena. The costumes of Emi Wada contribute to the visual definition of the imperial court and the large choral scenes, in which the Orchestra, Choir, Ballet and Children's Choir of the Arena di Verona Foundation are involved.
In the performance of September 3rd Calaf is played by Yusif Eyvazov, while on September 11 the role passes to Brian Jagde. Completing the cast on both evenings are Carlo Bosi like Altoum, Gëzim Myshketa like Ping, Matthew Macchioni like Pong, Saverio Fiore like Pang and Ankhbayar Enkhbold Like Mandarin. The opera's return on this centenary anniversary thus connects one of Puccini's later scores with a production that belongs to the Arena's recent stage tradition.
