Teatro Regio di Torino Foundation Presents

Opens the June 7, 2022 (9 pm) with Rustic cavalry of Pietro Mascagni the second edition of the Royal Opera Festival, the summer festival proposed by Teatro Regio of Turin in the magnificent eighteenth-century courtyard Arsenale Palace now the headquarters of the Army Training Command and Application School.

The drama of honor and jealousy imagined by Giovanni Verga, set in rural Sicily in the 19th century, as is well known, it was set to music by a young man Pietro Mascagni, winning the competition held by the publisher Sonzogno for a first work.

Rustic cavalry, on a booklet by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti is Guido Menasci, debuted in May 1890 to the Rome Opera House with a triumphal success, giving the twenty-six year old composer from Livorno fame in just one evening.

The work of Mascagni spoke a new language, which shook the musical world of the late nineteenth century like an earthquake, triggering a real one rebirth of the opera repertoire. A new page opened in the history of the opera house, usually included in the category of Verism, but actually broader: stories of high emotional intensity, marked by strong, visceral passions, set to music and sung in a new hand, narrated with a tight sonorous expression, innervated by intense melodic ideas.

To be mentioned in the margin, two other reasons of interest related to Rustic cavalry, the centenary of the death of Giovanni Verga (Catania 1840 - 1922) which falls this year, and the fact that the first performance of the theatrical version took place in Turin: the writer in fact published Cavalry first as a story within the collection "Life in the fields”(Milan 1880), but later he drew from it a play of the same name in one act; the play Rustic cavalry, subtitled 'popular scenesdebut with success at the Carignano Theater in Turin the January 14, 1884, the great protagonist Eleonora Duse.

To the Royal Opera Festival Rustic cavalry of Pietro Mascagni it will be performed for three evenings - in addition to the premiere on Tuesday 7 June also the 9 and 11 June, again at 9 pm - in setting up the Teatro Regio of Turin signed by Anna Maria Bruzzese, with sets and costumes by Paolo Ventura and lights of Lorenzo Maletto. On the podium of theOrchestra and Chorus of the Regio, Francesco Ivan Ciampa, choir master Andrea Secchi. Protagonists in the cast, the Santuzza di Anastasia Boldyreva, mezzo-soprano established on the international opera scene with prestigious collaborations, the tenor Marco Berti in the role of compare Turridu, and in the part of Alfio, Misha Kiria, the Georgian baritone who returns to the Regio Opera Festival after last summer's rehearsal in Pagliacci.
