Vicenza Opera Festival Presents

"Vicenza Opera Festival 2022"
The Vicenza Opera Festival 2022 stages a masterpiece by Benjamin Britten, the chamber opera The Turn of the Screw (The turn of the screw). Two performances scheduled in the extraordinary setting of Olympic Theater by Andrea Palladio, the opening night of the Festival, Friday October 21, and the reply on Sunday October 23, both at 19.30.

Commissioned by Venice Biennale, The Turn of the Screw is inspired by the homonymous story by Henry James (1898), and debuted successfully at the La Fenice Theater on September 14 of 1954. Structured in a prologue, two acts and sixteen scenes, the work makes use of the libretto by Myfanwy Piper, art critic linked to the avant-garde who for Britten would also write the subsequent librettos of Owen Wingrave (1971) and Death in Venice (1973).

The plot of the work is that of a ghost-story, set in a remote home in the English countryside. The protagonists are one young governess is two orphans entrusted to her, the children Miles and his sister Flora, subject to the influence of a pair of evil spirits, ghosts of two individuals who had served in that house: the previous governess Miss Jessel and the waiter Quint. A work of great psychological tension, the work touches on one of the themes particularly dear to the English composer: the world of childhood, a symbol of innocence, contrasted with the violent and corrupt world of adults.

Considered a milestone of the twentieth century music, The turn of the screw - subtended by the ambiguous fascination of the supernatural - it combines psychological intensity with the refinement of musical language, the free and fluid development of the plot with the highly controlled formal structure. "With a minimum of resources, Britten has built one of the most fascinating and original plays that the opera house has ever had.", So the music critic Alberto Batisti.

The London tenor will be engaged on the stage of the Olympic Theater Andrew Staples in the role of the waiter Quint, the soprano Miah Persson in the part of the Institutrice, the coloratura soprano Laura Aikin as Mrs Grose and the mezzo-soprano Allison Cook in those of Miss Jessel; in the roles of the two children Miles and Flora, the very young Ben Fletcher is Lucy Barlow.

The direction of the show is supervised by the same Iván Fischer - also on the podium at the helm of the Budapest Festival Orchestra - in collaboration with Marco Gandini, the costumes are signed by Anna Biagiotti, the scenes from Andrea Tocchio, the lights from Nils Riefstahl.
