Social Theater of Mantua
The Teatro Sociale, built between 1818 and 1822 to a design by Luigi Canonica, is the largest historical theater in Mantua and is recognized as a theater of tradition.

Season

At the moment the society of the stage players does not organize any opera season preferring to rent the hall to the various itinerant companies.

The Teatro Sociale di Mantova is located in the center of the city, precisely in Piazza Felice Cavallotti. It was built during the Restoration period by the will and strong desire of a Mantuan citizen named Luigi Preti, who founded the Society of Private Citizens in 1816, which was later given the name of the theatre. The construction of the Teatro Sociale lasted from 1818 to 1822 and was conceived by the architect Luigi Canonica, a pupil of Piermarini, who was inspired by the neoclassical forms and schemes of the time. On 11 January 1817 the first Commission was established and the indicative cost of the work was set at 209,000 lire; a year later, having obtained the permits, the land and carried out the demolitions, the first stone was laid.

The Teatro Sociale of Mantua has a low and wide facade, which has recently been restored and brought back to its original beauty. Despite its size, the facade maintains the majesty of a Greek temple thanks to the structure of the pronaos with six columns surmounted by a triangular pediment. Inside, the theater can accommodate about nine hundred spectators and is structured on the canonical model of the classical theater of the nineteenth century, with an audience, three tiers of boxes and two galleries.

The interiors of the Teatro Sociale in Mantua feature decorations and frescoes created both by local artists and by artists of national fame such as Francesco Hayez, who painted the medallions depicting Apollo and Minerva on the vault of the stalls. Originally built to host operas, the theater is part of the 24 theaters called "Teatro di Tradizione" and has the task of promoting, facilitating and coordinating musical activities, especially operas, in the province of Mantua.

The administration of the Palazzo del Teatro Sociale is today entrusted to a Board of Directors, known as the "Management", made up of five members appointed every three years by the Assembly of Palchettisti. The boxes, established as a non-profit association, also have the aim of promoting theatrical activities and performances.

The stage has welcomed famous artists of all ages such as Eleonora Duse, Giuseppina Strepponi, Mario Del Monaco, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Renata Scotto, Arturo Toscanini, Beniamino Gigli, Luciano Pavarotti and Katia Ricciarelli.
