The sleepwalker, melodrama in two acts with libretto by Happy Romans, is one of the great masterpieces of Vincenzo Bellini, title crowned with success since the first performance which took place at Carcano Theater in Milan on March 6 1831 and never left the repertoire.

Written in a very short time at the beginning of 1831 in Moltrasio on Lake Como, where the composer often stayed, the work is inspired by the pantomime ballet 'La sonnambule ou l'arrivée d'un nouveau seigneur' choreographed by Jean-Pierre Aumer with a libretto by Eugene Scribe  (Paris, 1827), in turn based on the 1819 vaudeville of the same name by Scribe and Germain Delavigne.

The plot is set in a Swiss village in an unspecified time, and tells the story of the two engaged couples Amina and Elvino. Amina, a candid girl suffering from sleepwalking, the night before the wedding is found sleeping in the room of Count Rodolfo who has just arrived in town. Elvino, feeling betrayed, wants to renounce the marriage, but Amina's innocence soon becomes clear and, once exonerated, she can embrace her beloved again.

The phenomenon of sleepwalking, similar to romantic sensitivity, exerted a magnetic fascination on artists and the public, like madness, another theme dear to contemporary scenes. In the suspension between sleep and wakefulness, the mysterious psychic phenomenon lent itself wonderfully to Bellini's rarefied vocal writing, of pure bel canto skill, such as Amina's very famous aria, “Ah, non credea mirarti”: an emblem of the melodic inventiveness of the Catanian swan.

Directorial reading

It is the theme of sleepwalking that inspired the two Bordeaux 'metteurs en scène' Clarac-Deloeuil > the labs the multimedia nature of the installation, which aims to explore the psyche of Amina and the other protagonists of the drama by fusing dreams and fragments of reality.

«Perhaps paradoxically, we focused this installation not so much on the awakening of the sleepwalker – they say Jean-Philippe Clarac is Olivier Deloeuil – as much as about his falling asleep, which is shown at the beginning of the show. The exhibition develops in the form of a performative installation, in the Galleria Elvezia, a pop-up art gallery located on the stage of the Costanzi Theatre. The show offers a journey into the restless sleep of the protagonist, a young woman who lives in a state of half-sleep, in an altered sensorial regime. Through the use of videos recorded in a Roman hotel room, in the Opera Theater district and at Palazzo Barberini, we follow Amina's inner journey up until the day of her wedding to Elvino."

The conductor's comment

«La sonnambula is undoubtedly a title that represents one of Bellini's highest creative impulses – explains the director Francesco Lanzillotta – developed within a simple plot, with innocent and idyllic tones. The staves of this title are filled with melodies. The semi-serious genre to which La sonnambula belongs, purified of the comic element, as well as the idyllic tones mentioned above, do not however eliminate the conflicts that unravel between the protagonists in this work. Precisely the misunderstanding, with the consequent conflict between the two lovers, also reveals a vision of love as possession on Elvino's part. The idyll therefore does not materialize regardless but is achieved with effort, through the calming of conflict".
