Opera season

The opera season of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma will open on November 20 with a new opera premiered, a courageous and unusual choice: Julius Caesar, tragedy in music, commissioned to Giorgio Battistelli, one of the major composers of today and the recent Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. Author of the libretto based on the tragedy of the same name by Shakespeare And Ian Burton. The work will be staged under the direction of Robert Carsen, while he will be the teacher Daniele Gatti, on the podium of the Orchestra dell'Opera, to baptize this new composition which marks his farewell as musical director. In the international cast Clive Bayley in the role of Caesar, Elliot Madore is Julian Hubbard who will play Brutus and Cassius respectively. After the first Julius Caesar will be on stage with four other performances until November 28th.

Following, the symbolic work of the Costanzi Theater, the Tosca as he saw it Puccini in the world premiere of 1900. Back on stage from 4 to 12 December (with a reprise from 2 to 5 November 2022) directed by Alessandro Talevi rebuilt on the original layout of Adolf Hohenstein and the conducting of Paolo Arrivabeni. In the role of Floria Tosca for the first time at the Rome Opera Saioa Hernández, while Baron Scarpia will be played by Roberto Frontali. In the shoes of the painter and revolutionary Mario Cavaradossi he returns to Rome Vittorio Grigolo, on the stage that saw him make his thirteen-year-old debut in the role of the shepherd boy in the memorable 1990 edition of Tosca with Luciano Pavarotti.

From the 18 as of January 27, 2022 it will then be the turn of Kát'a Kabanová of Leoš Janáček, an absolute debut for the Costanzi Theater for some there is great expectation. The staging in co-production with the Royal Opera House of London is signed by Richard Jones, and earned him the Olivier Award 2019. On the podium the maestro David Robertson. Kát'a Kabanová is one of the greatest theatrical works of the twentieth century, in which social conflicts of an authoritarian world and the protagonist's inner dramas intersect to lead to the final tragedy. Back as the protagonist Corinne Winters, already appreciated last season in the role of Madama Butterfly at the Circus Maximus. Also in the cast Charles Workman (Boris Grigorijevič), Susan Bickley (Marfa Kabanová), Julian Hubbard (Tikhon Kabanov).

TO February (from 8 to 17) finally in stage form Luisa Miller, tragic melodrama in three acts based on Schiller, a work that has long been considered central to the young man's stylistic evolution greens. Last May Michele Mariotti he had directed the opera streamed on Operaroma.tv for the first time, and will now mark his first direction at the Rome Opera after his four-year appointment as Musical Director of the Theater since November 2022. The show is directed by Damiano Michieletto, the scenes of Paolo Fantin and the costumes of Carla Thetis. The exhibition is made in collaboration with theZurich Opera.

The edition of the Turandot, scheduled from 22 to 31 March announces itself as a decidedly new reading of Puccini: the new staging will in fact be curated in every aspect (direction, sets, costumes, videos) by one of the most famous contemporary artists, To the Weiwei, which for the first time engages in a theatrical direction. A choice far from his usual artistic research, but one that Ai Weiwei accepted also because, at a very young age, he had been an extra in Zeffirelli's Turandot at the Metropolitan. Since those New York days, a long journey as an artist, and as an opponent of the Chinese government, has led him to be an absolute prominent figure in today's cultural world. The reading of the imaginary Chinese world of Gozzi and then of Puccini by a Chinese artist will be a reason of extraordinary interest. In the role of the princess they will take turns Oksana Dyka and Ewa Vesin, while in that of Calaf Bryan Hymel is Arsen Soghomonian.

In the role of Elvira Valton the return of Jessica Pratt, one of the most popular interpreters of the bel canto repertoire. In the role of Lord Arturo Talbo the American tenor Lawrence Brownlee will alternate with Francesco Demuro. Sir Riccardo Forth will be played by Franco Vassallo, Sir Giorgio Valton from Nicola Olive trees and Lord Gualtiero Valton from Roberto Lorenzi.

From the 3 to 11 June a classic Verdi, Ernani, a melodrama full of beautiful and famous arias such as "Ernani, involami" and popular choral moments such as "Si risesti il Leon di Castiglia", in which the great composer anticipates characters and psychologies that he will develop in subsequent creations, those defined "of maturity ". The play by Victor Hugo "Manifesto" of French romanticism. On the podium the teacher Marco Armiliato; the direction of this staging which had inaugurated the 2013/14 season is signed by Hugo de Ana, who also designed sets and costumes. On the scene an international cast:  Francis Apple trees (Ernani), Evgeny Stavinsky (de Silva), Angela Meade (Elvira).

Last title of the opera season, staged from 4 to 13 October, Alceste of Gluck, a work of extreme charm and rare execution: it has been missing from the stages of the Opera House since 1967. On the podium the maestro Gianluca Capuano, eighteenth-century repertoire specialist. The direction of this staging of the Bayerische Staatsoper is signed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui who also signs the choreography. In his vision, the dancers of the company   they are an extension of the choir, a kind of silent choir. In the cast Stanislas de Barbeyrac (Admète), Marina Viotti (Alceste), Luca Tittoto (Grand Prêtre) e Patrik Reiter (Evandre).
