Teatro alla Scala Foundation Presents

“ Season 2022-2023 – Opera ”
Couldn't miss the Teatro alla Scala among the gifts paid to Franco Zeffirelli for the 100 years from birth: at Piermarini from 4 to 26 March 2023 the now legendary will be staged Bohème which debuted on that stage 60 years ago, in 1963, under the baton of Herbert von Karajan.

Eight performances scheduled for the new revival of the historic staging, the twenty-fourth (the last dates back to 2017), with the 'first' on March 4 to mark the milestone of the 200th performance.

An announced success, as it could not be otherwise for one of the most popular masterpieces Giacomo Puccini in this famous staging: two weeks after its debut, the show is sold out for all the performances.

The 'centennial' bohème will see the young Korean director on the podium Eun Sum Kim, at the helm of the San Francisco Opera since 2021, already appreciated at the Metropolitan in New York and now making her operatic debut at La Scala; on stage, Mimì will be played by Marina Rebeka in the first four performances; Irina Lungu, who in the first ones is Musetta, assumes the role of the protagonist in the following four, when the young Italian soprano takes over Mariam Battistelli at his Scala debut. As Rodolfo, the acclaimed British-Italian tenor Freddie De Tommaso, already at La Scala a year ago for Adriana Lecouvreur. Luca Micheletti, much applauded Guido di Monfort in the Sicilian Vespers of these days, is Marcello, Alessio Arduini Schaunard, E Andrea Concetti sings Alcindoro and Benoît. The cast is completed by two students of the Academy: Hyun-Seo David Park is Parpignol e Joseph DeLuca Customs Sergeant.

The direction of the Florentine master is resumed by Marco Gandini, the costumes are from Piero Tosi, the lights of Marco Filibeck.

In an interview with Sergio Talmon, Franco Zeffirelli he declared: [Bohème's] “was the luckiest staging of my entire career. The quality is completely protected by the structures of La Scala who care a lot about this show, they have jealously preserved it, by the Choir and by all those who were born in it and feel it on them like a home dress. We hit it then. It was one of those blessed things! We nailed it, with Karajan! We were evidently twenty years ahead of our time, because sixteen years later it is still hailed as the last word on the staging of Bohème, it is still fresh, as if it were conceived today, it means that when we conceived it we were projected into the future. I consider it the most successful thing of my entire operatic career, also because I had the pleasure of seeing the rebirth [...] of the memorable musical performances [...] that have flourished within this staging and have found their home and their harmonic destination perfect".
