Nocturnes in music at the Court of the Duchess
The splendid Reggia di Colorno, "the Versailles of the Dukes of Parma" hosts the eighth edition of the "Summer Reggia Opera Festival", which from year to year experiences growing success. Originally scheduled from 29 June to 30 July 2021, due to adverse weather conditions, the closing of the event has been postponed to 9 August.
The Palazzo Ducale, a few kilometers from Parma, is one of the most evocative and artistic places in the area. On the occasion of the festival, the stalls are set up in the central avenue of the magnificent gardens, with the stage positioned at the foot of the staircase of the Royal Palace. In this enchanting setting the Reggia Festival takes place every year, created by Parma OperArt in collaboration with Antea Progetti, the Province of Parma and the Municipality of Colorno.
The 2021 edition features three of the major works in the repertoire: Norm by Vincenzo Bellini, The elixir of love by Gaetano Donizetti e La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini; a Gala Musical is also scheduled, and John Rutter's Requiem.
The Festival opens on 29 June with Norm by Vincenzo Bellini, in the staging that recently made its debut at the Teatro Comunale in Ferrara (a co-production of Parma OperArt, Fondazione Teatro Comunale of Ferrara and Teatro G. Borgatti of Cento).
The soprano Renata Campanella is the protagonist in the demanding role of the title, while Adalgisa is played by Yulia Merkudinova, Pollione by the tenor Fabio Armiliato, one of the most popular voices on the international opera scene.
Directed by Maria Cristina Osti is also conceived as a tribute to the Divine Comedy, between the split of love seen as human hell, violent and passionate, while the Moon evokes the triumph of the feminine and the sublimated sacrifice in the final paradisiacal catharsis. The City of Ferrara Orchestra is conducted by Lorenzo Bizzarri, Master of the “Giuseppe Verdi” Chorus Mirko Banzato.
On 6 July it will go on stage La Boheme by Puccini, among the most loved and performed works all over the world. The soprano Yulia Kuchina, winner of the Pelizzoni opera competition in 2020, will sing in the role of Mimì, while the tenor Ugo Tarquini will interpret Rodolfo. Deborah Solange Martinez will be Musetta, Marco Camastra, Marcello. The direction, respectful of tradition, is by Eddy Lovaglio. With the Corale Lirica San Rocco prepared by Marialuce Monari, and the Orchestra Città di Ferrara, conductor Lorenzo Bizzarri.
Scheduled for July 13, due to adverse weather conditions, the performance of the last work on the bill will be postponed to August 9, The elixir of love by Donizetti. Opera with a fresh, fun and colorful atmosphere, it is also known by occasional music lovers for some very famous pieces often performed in opera concerts, such as the aria 'Una furtiva lagrima', the entry of Dulcamara 'Udite o rustici' and the barcarola a two voices 'I am rich and you are beautiful'.
The cast is formed by the tenor Paolo Lo Biundo in the role of Nemorino, the soprano Claudia Nicole Calabrese in that of Adina, the baritone Carlo Morini in the part of Belcore, the bass Alberto Bianchi in that of doctor Dulcamara, while the soprano Medea De Anna it's Giannetta. Also on stage the actress M. Antonietta Centoducati as “Dulcamara's servant”, who in the directorial idea of Eddy Lovaglio introduces a Fellini-inspired quote inspired by Gelsomina from 'La strada'. With the Corale Lirica San Rocco and the Orchestra Città di Ferrara, Master of the choir Marialuce Monari, conductor Lorenzo Bizzarri.
The program of the Reggia Opera Festival is completed by a Gala that offers the most beautiful songs of the Musical, interpreted and danced by the Bulgarian showgirl Desislava Nikolova, for the first time in Italy (Gala Musical, July 20)
Last event scheduled for this edition, the Requiem by John Rutter which will be performed in the evocative Ducal Chapel of San Liborio on July 30, in memory of the victims of Covid-19.
Rutter, English composer, choir conductor organist and music producer, wrote his Requiem in 1985, dedicating it to the memory of his father. The piece was immediately a resounding success, so much so that in the first six months of its publication it had more than five hundred performances in the United States alone.
Performing the score in Colorno will be Roberto Barrali at the piano, soprano Angela Gandolfo and the Sine Nomine Choir directed by Elena Rosselli.

The Royal Palace of Colorno The Reggia di Colorno, former residence of the Sanseverino, the Farnese, the Bourbons and Maria Luigia of Austria, overlooks the Parma stream, the town square and a beautiful French garden restored in recent years. It includes over 400 halls, courtyards and courtyards, including the apartments of the Duke and Duchess, the Great Hall, the neoclassical Chapel of San Liborio, with paintings by famous artists and the Serassi organ, used for the annual concert season.
