Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa - "The Concerts of the Normal"
The Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, founded by Napoleon in 1810, is the oldest Italian university school. Since 1967 it has promoted the classical music season 'I Concerti della Normale'

The Concerts of the Normale were born in 1967 on the initiative of the then Director, Gilberto Bernardini, and of Piero Farulli (1920 - 2012) famous violist and leading figure of the Italian music scene also as teacher and organizer.

"The intent, to date unchanged, "As the institutional presentation of the review states,"was to offer pupils of the School, and the wider public of the city and the territory, a review that alternated a traditional musical repertoire with more sophisticated and unusual choices, in recognition of classical music as a fundamental part of our culture, and stimulation of individual growth. "

In 2021, the Concerts of the Normale cross the milestone of the 55 edition, testifying to the success and value of the initiative, in which all the Directors who took turns at the helm of the Scuola Normale believed, seeing music as a source of enrichment, stimulus cultural and individual growth.

Since then, initially under the direction of Piero Farulli and then of Andrew Mascagni (1987- 1993), Carlo de Incontrera (1993 - 2013), Jeffrey Swann (2014 - 2016), and now Carlo Boccadoro - the concert season has become a consolidated tradition of the Normale.

The review is organized annually in collaboration with the Pisa Theater Foundation - Verdi Theater, venue of the concerts, and with the financial support of the Pisa Foundation, partners who have always supported Normale in the realization of this cultural project.

The billboard de The Concerts of the Normale presents a combined path of musical eras and styles, instrumental interpretations and different compositional genres, alternating artists of great fame and young people of sure talent, with the aim of meeting both the taste and appreciation of loyal enthusiasts and to attract interest of an ever wider and more diversified new audience

The musical program is flanked by open introductory lessons that deepen poetics, periods and styles, to offer the audience of the Season further suggestions and reflections on what they will hear.

The concert season is part of the 'Third mission '(Public Engagement) of the Scuola Normale di Pisa (info which includes numerous initiatives such as Communicate the research (conferences, guided tours, interdisciplinary debates), The Fridays of the Normal (cycle of conferences of personalities from culture, research, art, politics), The Readings of the Normale (full collective readings of a literary masterpiece), Academic Theater Festival (FAcT, review of European university theater companies).


The Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa is a university institute with a special organization. It promotes culture, teaching and research in the humanities, mathematical and natural sciences, and social sciences, exploring their interconnections.

Founded by Napoleon in 1810, following the example of the normal Parisian École, it is the oldest Italian university school. The prestige of the Normale in the field of research and training is internationally recognized. Two of his former students - Giovanni Gronchi and Carlo Azeglio Ciampi - were presidents of the Republic; three - Giosuè Carducci, Enrico Fermi and Carlo Rubbia - received the Nobel Prize, and, more recently, Alessio Figalli won the Fields Medal.

Since 2019 it has been directed by the mathematician Luigi Ambrosio.
