Umbrian Music Festival 2022
One of the oldest festivals in Italy returns to the green heart of Italy, the 77th edition chooses the theme 'Mothers'
From 2 to 17 September 2022 come back there Umbrian Music Festival, the oldest festival in the region and one of the oldest in the whole peninsula: in fact, it reaches the 77th edition, bringing great music back to the most evocative places in Perugia and other locations in Umbria such as Montegabbione, San Gemini, Norcia, Torgiano, Scheggino and Montefalco.

The title chosen for the Umbrian Music Festival 2022 is 'Mothers', theme that the artistic director Enrico Bronzi he illustrated as follows: “The symbolism of the Mother refers to the fertility of the earth and affirms itself as a mediator with the divine, since it provides substance to spiritual ideas. So it was in the ancient world and also in the Christian conception, where Mary is the instrument of the incarnation of the Sacred. The Umbrian Music Festival presents a tribute to mothers, in a dialogue between various musical forms of popular devotion and art music and with testimonies from the repertoire of the past three centuries ”.

The program

Sara Perugia, as usual, to host the opening and closing events of the festival: the 77th Umbrian Music Festival opens Friday 2 September (9 pm) at Basilica of Saint Peter presenting an absolute masterpiece, the Vespers of the Blessed Virgin by Claudio Monteverdi, performed by Cremona Antiqua Choir and Orchestra directed by Antonio Greco.

The Closing concert, Saturday September 17 (9 pm) at the Church of San Filippo Neri will propose it instead Stabat Mater by Alessandro Scarlatti, protagonistsPerugia Chamber Orchestra directed by Enrico Bronzi, with Elisabeth Breuer, soprano, Anna Lucia Richter, mezzo-soprano, and Fabio Ciofini to the organ.

Two of the most important events of the bill follow, the recital of Mariangela Gualtieri, accompanied by the Quartet Noûs with Leonardo Ramadori to percussion, engaged in the piece Heavenly Maternal Light (2017) by the Roman composer Silvia Colasanti, Saturday September 3 (6 pm) at Villa of Sant'Egidio in Perugia;

Monday September 5th, (9 pm) in Perugia Cloister of San Pietro, George Battistelli will direct his Experimentum Mundi, work of imaginative music for an actor, five natural voices of women, sixteen artisans and a percussionist taken fromEncyclopédie by Denis Diderot and Jean Le Rond D'Alembert, with Beppe Servillo, narrator, e Nicola Raffone to percussion.

The places of music

The Umbrian Music Festival also with the 2022 edition confirms its authentically regional vocation: in addition to the appointments in the capital, the festival will in fact animate several particularly fascinating and evocative places in the area:

Among these, the very famous Scarzuola in Montegabbione, the city-theater created by the Milanese architect Tommaso Buzzi between 1958 and 1978, that Sunday September 4th (6 pm) will host one of the most significant events of the festival, the concert dedicated to the Masonic soul of Mozart; on stage thePerugia Chamber Orchestra, the Chorus of the Siena Cathedral “Guido Chigi Saracini”, The soprano Alina Wunderlin, the tenor Matthew Swensen, choir master Lorenzo Donati, directs Enrico Bronzi. (Ed, due to adverse weather conditions, the concert is moved to the Morlacchi Theater in Perugia).

Other stages lead to Scheggino (Thursday September 8 with the Trio Metamorphosi, music by Haydn, Beethoven, Schumann), San Gemini (Friday September 9 with the mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska is Kunal Lahiry at the piano, at the center of the program the famous Schumann lieder cycle, Frauenliebe und -leben, Amore e vita di donna) and again at Torgiano (Tuesday September 13 with the Quartet Noûs is Tommaso Lonquich, clarinet, music by Brahms and Shostakovic).

Two other appointments on the bill are made in synergy with the festival Music with a view sponsored by the Amur Committee, the first takes place on Saturday September 10 (6 pm) at Villa Valvitiano of Perugia with the Ruisi Quartet, featuring pieces by Haydn and Britten, the second will take place on Sunday Sept. 11 (12 noon) to Museum of San Francesco di Montefalco, with the Venethos Ensemble is Cristina Vidoni on the cello, engaged in Schubert's Quintet D 956.

Chorally. The review dedicated to the Umbrian Choirs

Great protagonists of this year's Umbrian Music Festival will be the choirs, with particular attention to the most important Umbrian realities to which the review will be dedicated "Chorally"Articulated in six concerts.

Appointment at Church of Sant'Ercolano in Perugia: Monday September 5th, at 18, with the Libercantus Choir directed by Vladimiro Vagnetti; Tuesday 6, at 21, with Harmonious enchantment directed by Franco Radicchia; Friday 9, at 18, with the Choir S. Spirito Volumnia directed by Francesco Ragni; Saturday September 10, at 21, with l'Accademia degli Unisoni directed by Francesco Ragni; Monday 12, at 21, with the Ensemble Coristi a Priori conducted by Carmen Cicconofri, with the participation of Ascanio Quartet; Friday September 16, at 21, with the Choir of the University of Perugia directed by Marta Alunni Pini. Complete the program, Thursday 15 at 6 pm in the Aula Magna of the University for Foreigners, the concert of Ha-Kol Choir - Jewish Choir of Rome, directed by Alberto De Sanctis.

The Mediterranean and the journey into the cultures of the world

"Mother" it is also the Mediterranean basin, the cradle of peoples and a living heritage of traditions and voices. The concert scheduled at will give a taste of it Norcia the September 7 (6 pm, piazza San Benedetto), Kalinifta - the sounds of the Mediterranean, With the'Perugia Chamber Orchestra, Gabriele Mirabassi on the clarinet, Kyriacoula Constantinou, voice, and the musical direction of Enrico Bindocci.

Two other concerts dedicated to this trend will be hosted by Temple of S. Michele Arcangelo in Perugia: Sunday Sept. 11 (6 pm) on Ay Amor trio presents Songs of mystical and secular women in Al-Andalus, while Thursday 15 (9 pm) the ensemble Cuncordu of Castelsardo proposes sacred songs of the Sardinian tradition and profane songs of the Corsican tradition.

Among other appointments, to report Filippo Gorini on the piano with Bach's The Art of the Fugue, the September 12 6 pm always at the Temple of S. Michele Arcangelo, the concert of Gaia Trionfera, violin, e Alexander Voronstov, piano the September 13 6 pm at the Auditorium S. Cecilia in Perugia, vlo show Ziganoff, “From klezmer to jazz along the streets of Bessarabia"With the participation of Igor Polesitsky, violin, and the ethnomusicologist Renato Morelli, Wednesday September 14 at 6 pm in the Aula Magna of the University for Foreigners, and the conference-concert by Chiara Bertoglio on the (Blessed?) Virgin Mary, Friday September 16 at 6 pm at the Teatro della Sapienza in Perugia.

Finally, the programming of the 77th Umbrian Music Festival is completed with two musical performances for the little ones, a new appointment in the conference-concert cycle.
