Rovigo Cello City 2023 | 10th edition
Rovigo is once again the capital of the cello with a rich week of concerts and masterclasses; among the prominent guests, Giovanni Sollima, Enrico Dindo, Arthur Hornig
From 3 to 10 September 2023 come back Rovigo Cello City, the festival that for a week transforms the beautiful Venetian city into capital of the cello, with a rich program of concerts is masterclass.

Organized byFrancesco Venezze Musical Association, Rovigo Cello City crosses the finish line of tithe edition, and is entrusted for the second consecutive year to the artistic direction of Gerard Felisatti which signs a prestigious program with big names and young talents.

Among the stars of the festival, John Sollima, Enrico Dindo is Arthur Hornig (first cello of the Deutsche Oper Orchestra Berlin), who will also hold master classes for students; then there will be the pianist Leonora Armellini, Antonio Artese Trio, the musicologist Nicoletta Confalone, L'Vivaldi Ensemble of I Solisti Veneti, The Soloists of Pavia, the harpsichordist Lorenzo Feder, i pianists Carlotta Maestrini is Riccardo Martinelli, the cellists Stefano Bruno, Luca Giovannini is Luigi Puxeddu.

They will be a constant presence alongside them The Cellos of Rovigo Cello City, the cello orchestra made up of Conservatory students and masterclass students, who will have the opportunity to play together with the great masters and the most expert concert performers.

The best students of the masterclasses will duet with the great concert performers, while a larger group of students will give life to the cello orchestra present in many events of the festival: these moments of concrete sharing of the stage between students and teachers represent a cornerstone of the festival : Rovigo Cello City was in fact born in 2014 from an initiative by Luigi Puxeddu, with the aim of enhancing the excellence of the Rovigo cello school founded by Luca Simoncini, concert performer and teacher who has made the Rovigo Conservatory a center of excellence for the study of this instrument. And to Luca Simoncini, who recently and prematurely passed away, Rovigo Cello City 2023 is dedicated.

The Festival will also be an opportunity to discover the rich historical, artistic and monumental heritage of the "city of roses", starting from the main concert venue, the famousTemple of the Rround', the Church of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso built between the 16th and 17th centuries and famous for its octagonal plan; other events will take place at Foyer of the Teatro Sociale, the Cloister of the Museum of the Great Rivers, the Church of Christ and theAuditorium of the Conservatory.

The program

Rovigo Cello City 2023 inaugurates Sunday September 3 (9 pm) to Temple of the Rotunda with the event Cellos at work of which he will be the protagonist Arthur Hornig, principal cellist of the Deutsche Oper Orchestra in Berlin; with him on stage the soprano Maria Novella Malfatti; to accompany them, the Melos Choir, Venezze Consort, The Cellos of Rovigo Cello City, directs Gerard Felisatti. The varied program ranges from Rossini, Verdi and Puccini to Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Dvořák.

The September 4th to the Foyer of the Teatro Sociale (5.30 pm) it will be the turn of the musicologist Nicoletta Confalone, which presents its book One hundred years of music, written to celebrate the first century of life of the Francesco Venezze Musical Association; the conversation will be counterpointed by the Cellos of Rovigo Cello City.

The September 5th the cellist Luigi Puxeddu, founder of the Festival, together with Antonio Artese Trio presents Jazz Cello Night, music by Bolling, Gershwin, Artese; the appointment is at Cloister of the Museum of the Great Rivers, 21.00.

The September 6 (5.30 pm) the harpsichordist Lorenzo Feder with I Violoncelli di Rovigo Cello City will be at Church of Christ for a "Vivaldi cocktails", excursus through the sonatas of the great Venetian composer.

Always the September 6, at 9pm at the Reduced of the Social Theatre, the young cellist Stefano Bruno (winner of the Amsterdam Cello Biennial Competition 2022) will play pieces by Bach and Zoltán Kodály for the program entitled Forgetting.

The September 7 toAuditorium of the Conservatory the very talented pianist will be on stage Leonora Armellini who will share the stage with the best students of the Rovigo Cello City master classes, in the concert for cello and piano duo Cello Songs, which presents an anthology of well-known pages of the repertoire.

L8 September still at theAuditorium of the Conservatory is on schedule The Dawn of Classicism: Luca Giovannini on the cello e Riccardo Martinelli at the piano withVivaldi Ensemble of I Solisti Veneti will offer music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Luigi Boccherini.

The September 9, a prestigious evening at the Temple of the Rotunda with the famous cellist Enrico Dindo is The Soloists of Pavia: Kol Nidrei the title of the program, from the homonymous composition by Max Brunch on Jewish melodies chosen to open the concert which will continue with pieces by Dvořák and Haydn to end on the notes of Messiaen.

The September 10 to the Temple of the Rotunda, Rovigo Cello City 2023 closes with one of the most famous Italian artists on the international scene, the cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima: accompanied for the occasion by the piano of Carlotta Maestrini, will range from Beethoven to Sigur Ròs: Air the title of the evening, not to be missed.

A nice tradition of Rovigo Cello City is the gourmet appointment proposed in collaboration with the Godot ice cream shop, which every year creates the exclusive taste especially for the festival Cello. Presentation of taste "Cello 2023” on 3 September (4pm) at the ice cream shop (Via Domenico Piva, 13/3).
