Rome, Turandot at the Opera House is signed by Ai Weiwei, directed by Oksana Lyniv
A new reading of Puccini's masterpiece in the vision of the Chinese artist and activist, while the Ukrainian director, who has become a symbol of her country in these dramatic days, takes the podium

Teatro dell'Opera di Roma Foundation Presenta

TO Rome, a few days from the evening-event at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia with Pappano on the podium and Jonas Kaufmann and Sondra Radvanovsky in the leading roles, another important edition of the Turandot of Giacomo Puccini will be staged at Opera House from 22 to 31 March, edited by To the Weiwei for directing and visual aspects, and by Oksana Lyniv for musical direction.

The production, scheduled for March 2020 and stopped by the pandemic, finally arrives on the scene of the Costanzi and promises to be a truly new reading of Puccini's masterpiece. The very famous dissident Chinese artist will sign every aspect (direction, sets, costumes, videos) To the Weiwei, who ventured for the first time - and according to what he said, the only time - in directing.

A choice far from his usual artistic research, but one that Ai Weiwei accepted also because, at a very young age, he had been an extra in the Turandot of Zeffirelli to the Metropolitan. Since those New York days, a long journey as an artist, and as an opponent of the Chinese government, has led him to be an absolute prominent figure in today's cultural world. Read the imaginary Chinese world of  Carlo Goiters, and then of Puccini, on the part of a Chinese artist will be a reason of extraordinary interest: “I want to connect our life today with that of a hundred years ago, at the time when Puccini was confronted with the Chinese fairy tale - explains Ai Weiwei -. The world is like an opera. Turandot, this icy imaginary and real princess, signifies strength and power; Prince Calaf, his suitor, becomes a political refugee ”.

The reading of the Unknown Prince as a refugee, the scene representing - as anticipated by Ai Weiwei - the ruins of a city, the video showing the many bombs of recent human history, take on a dramatically current connotation, which makes this already more significant. relevant preparation.

It is difficult to ignore current events also with regard to the podium of the Capitoline Orchestra, where it returns after its Roman debut last May, Oksana Lyniv. The Ukrainian director, who has recently become a symbol of her country, has been the musical director of the Teatro Comunale in Bologna since January, the first woman to lead an Italian opera foundation; last summer she was also the first woman to direct at the Bayreuth Festival in 145 years and 176 male appearances.

In the role of the "cruel princess" they will alternate Oksana Dyka and Ewa Vesin (25, 27, 29, 31 March), while in that of the unknown prince Calaf, they will take turns Michael Fabiano is Angelo Villari (March 25, 27, 29, 31). The sweet slave Liù will be played by Francesca Dotto, alternating with Adriana Ferfecka (25, 27, 29, 31 March), Prince Timur da Antonio Di Matteo is Marco Spotti (25, 27, 29, 31 March); in the role of the three ministers Ping, Pang and Pong will be respectively Alessio Verna, Enrico Iviglia is Pietro Picone. The Prince of Persia will be played by the actor Chao Hsin with the offstage voices of the artists of the Choir Giuseppe Ruggiero (22, 24, 26, 29), Andrea La Rosa (25, 27), Leonardo Trinciarelli (30, 31). The young talent from Fabbrica completes the cast Rodrigo Ortiz, who plays the emperor Altoum, and the former pupil of Fabbrica Andrii Ganchuk. The set-up bears the signature of Peter van Praet and for the choreographic movements that of  Chiang Ching.
