From the 20th century to the contemporary, an ensemble of absolute reference

An absolute reference group for contemporary and 20th century music, the Arditti Quartet crosses the finish line 50 years of activity, and celebrate the anniversary with a tour of celebratory concerts in many of the most prestigious halls in the world.

Led by the violinist Irvine Arditti, the prestigious ensemble – of which they are part of Ashot Sarkissjan to the violin, Ralf Ehlers to viola and Lucas Fels on the cello – arrives at Rome the February 20, 2024 (20.30) in theGreat Hall of the Wisdom, guest of the 79th Season IUC University Concert Institution, for an evening that promises to be memorable.

The Arditti Quartet during his long career he collaborated with dozens of composers, from Stockhausen and Sciarrino to Kurtag and Gubaidulina, from Cage to Carter. Many of them wrote pieces specifically for the ensemble, which has decisively marked the panorama of contemporary music.

Thanks to its refined interpretations and numerous world premieres, the Arditti Quartet has gained worldwide fame, securing a prominent place in the history of music. Among the pieces presented by the ensemble are the string quartets of Adès, Britten, Cage, Francesconi, Gubaidulina, Kagel, Kurtag, Ligeti, Maderna, Rihm, Scelsi, Sciarrino, Stockhausen and Xenakis, to name just a few. The important discography is also vast and highly awarded, counting over 200 recordings, including numerous works by contemporary composers as well as the complete works for strings of the Second Vienna School.

The artistic path of the Arditti Quartet is perfectly reflected in the choice of the program proposed at the IUC, among "historical" pieces by masters of the second half of the twentieth century, from Penderecki to Berio, Ligeti is Xenakis, combined with pieces by modern-day authors such as the Slovenian Nina Senk its English James Clarke.
