Teatro dell'Opera di Roma Foundation Presenta

To the Rome Opera House from 3 to 11 June 2022 come back Ernani, the young man's masterpiece greens, with an "all stars" cast: Francesco Meli, Angela Meade, Ludovic Tézier is Evgeny Stavinsky, artists among the most requested of the international opera scene. On the podium Marco Armiliato, who returns to direct theRome Opera Orchestra after his last presence in 1999. The sumptuous setting is the one signed by Hugo de Ana, who had designed it for the inauguration of the 2013-14 season under the direction of Riccardo Muti.

Ernani, a turning point in the early production of Giuseppe Verdi, was first performed in March 1844 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. The work includes some of the most famous and most beautiful Verdi arias, "Ernani, involami", "Come dew al cespite", "Oh, de 'verd years my", and enthralling choral moments such as the famous "Si awaken the leon di Castiglia ”, which caused a sensation in the Risorgimento years and is still very popular today. Ernani's story is due to the pen of Victor Hugo, among the greatest literary icons of the time; the booklet of Francesco Maria Piave in fact it is based on the homonymous drama of the French writer, almost a "manifesto" of theatrical romanticism.

“I am happy to return to the Rome Opera with a title like Ernani- dice Marco Armiliato - one of my favorites from the entire Verdi repertoire. Its very rich score creates dark and enveloping atmospheres and is intertwined with the exciting tale taken by Victor Hugo. The ever-pressing rhythm and the orchestral accents help to define a perfect dramaturgy, on which the four solo parts stand out, grappling with pages of extraordinary vocal virtuosity ".

The title role will be played by Francesco Meli, among the most requested tenors, particularly appreciated in the Verdi repertoire, cornerstone of his artistic career. Numerous his Verdi interpretations at the Rome Opera, from Gabriele Adorno in Simon Boccanegra in 2012 under the direction of Riccardo Muti up to the recent performance as Charles VII in Giovanna D'Arco, directed by Daniele Gatti.

Alongside Meli there are three other great voices, all of them debut at the Costanzi Theater. The American soprano Angela Meade is a star of the Metropolitan of New York, where she made her debut in 2008 just like Elvira in Ernani and where she embodied the great heroines of the nineteenth-century repertoire. The French baritone Ludovic Tézier (Don Carlo) performs in the main theaters of the world with conductors such as Muti, Mehta, Chung and Gardiner. The Russian bass Evgeny Stavinsky (Silva), he covered Mozart and Rossini roles, and then moved on to the dramatic Belcanto and to Verdi, of which he is often called upon to interpret the Requiem.

In the parts of Elvira and Don Carlo, Meade and Tézier alternate respectively Anastasia Bartoli is Giovanni Meoni. The cast is completed by the young talents of the current edition of "Fabbrica" Young Artist Program: Marianna Map (Giovanna), Rodrigo Ortiz (Don Riccardo), Alexander Of death (Iago).

The master directs the choir Roberto Gabbiani. Director Hugo de Ana he also signs sets and costumes, while the lights are taken care of by Vinicio Cheli.

The story of Ernani takes place in Spain in 1519. Don Giovanni d'Aragona, in the role of Ernani, leads a revolt against Charles, King of Spain. Ernani is in love with Elvira, betrothed to his old uncle de Silva, great from Spain, but so is Carlo. Ernani's revolt fails and the young man takes refuge in the castle of de Silva. Carlo arrives and manages to take Elvira away with him. Ernani reveals to de Silva that the king is in love with the young woman and urges him to take revenge and avenge him too. Silva agrees and Ernani ratifies the pact by giving him a hunting horn: when Silva wants Ernani's death, he will blow the horn three times and the young man will take his own life. Meanwhile, Charles, having become emperor, forgives the conspirators and gives Elvira in marriage to Ernani. Three horn sounds are heard in the distance during the wedding party. Ernani, after having tried in vain to move de Silva, faithful to his word, kills himself.
