Teatro dell'Opera di Roma Foundation Presenta

“ Season 2023 – 24 ”
Othello of Joseph greens takes place at Rome Opera House from 1 to 12 June 2024 in the production created by the Monte Carlo Opéra and the Tbilisi National Opera, signed by the director Allex Aguilera, known for his collaborations with the Catalan collective La Fura dels Baus and his debut at Costanzi. Offered in its Italian premiere, the show features protagonists Gregory Kunde like Othello, Roberta Mantegna in the role of Desdemona e Igor Golovatenko in that of Iago. The maestro takes to the podium, leading the Capitoline Lirico Orchestra Daniel Oren, recognized interpreter of Verdi and Puccini scores; the Rome Opera Choir, supported by the School of Choral Singing, is directed by Cyrus Visco.

Othello, lyrical drama in four acts with a libretto by Arrigo Boito taken from the homonymous tragedy by Shakespeare, debuted on February 5 1887 at La Scala in Milan, arriving a few weeks later at the Costanzi, where it was performed on 16 April of that year.

Giuseppe Verdi's penultimate opera, Otello lays bare humanity in all its passions, including the basest ones. It is suspicions, plots and jealousies, but above all violence that constitute the fulcrum of the Shakespearean drama set to music by Verdi, who with this opera revolutionizes his musical language, dissolving arias and recitatives in a musical flow not free from Wagnerian influences.

Recovering the idea of the unity of time and place typical of classical theatre, Aguilera imagined a single scenario divided into three levels for all four acts (the scenography is Bruno De Lavenère) in which Othello's troubled psyche, Iago's twisted intrigues and Desdemona's innocent purity intertwine and develop immersed in an intimate twilight. Sign the scenography Bruno De Lavenère, the lights are of Laurent Castaingt, the costumes of Françoise Raybaud Pace and of Etienne Guiol, the videos are edited by Arnaud Pottier.

Allex Aguilera he has collaborated with various prestigious artists such as Zubin Mehta, Henrik Nánási, Werner Herzog and Chen Kaige. He directed Tristan und Isolde at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Pagliacci at the Opéra of Monte Carlo, Carmen at the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro (where he also made his debut as a set designer) and, with La Fura dels Baus, Les Troyens by Berlioz, again at the Reina Sofía, Die Walküre and Siegfried at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville. His latest works include La Traviata in Andorra, Donizetti's La Favorita at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo and Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream for the reopening of the 2021 Nervi Music Ballet Festival in Genoa.

In the title role is one of today's greatest interpreters of Verdi's Otello, the tenor Gregory Kunde. After the debut at the Fenice in Venice, he sang it all over the world in the theaters of Tokyo, London, Barcelona, Monte Carlo, Dresden, Vienna, Paris. A famous and appreciated bel canto singer, he then moved on to the dramatic repertoire, triumphing not only in Othello, but also in La damnation de Faust, Andrea Chénier, Manon Lescaut and Turandot. He has already been the protagonist in the staging of Aguilera at the Monte Carlo Opera in 2019. He returns to the Rome Opera after having sung, last season, in Verdi's Aida written by Livermore and in the diptych Il tabarro/Il castello del Prince Bluebeard directed by Johannes Erath. Desdemona is the soprano instead Roberta Mantegna. Graduated in 2018 in the first edition of "Fabbrica", the Young Artist Program of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, she sang in Carmen at the Baths of Caracalla and in I masnadieri, Les Vêpres siciliennes, Il trovatore and Luisa Miller at the Costanzi. In 2016 he received first prize at the Vincenzo Bellini International Belcanto Competition in Marseille. Finally, the Russian baritone plays the part of Iago Igor Golovatenko, performed on the prestigious international stages of the Metropolitan Opera House, Washington National Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Royal Opera House, Semperoper Dresden. It is his debut at the Rome Opera. On the dates of 5, 8 and 11 June, the role of Otello is sung by Marco Berti, Desdemona from Victory Yeo (interpreter of the Moor's wife also in the rerun of 12 June), Iago da Vladimir Stoyanov. They complete the cast Irene Savignano (Emilia), graduated from the “Fabbrica” Young Artist Program of the Opera di Roma, Francesco Pittari (Roderigo), Alessio Cacciamani (Lodovico), Alessio Verna (Mountain), Piotr Buszewski (Cassius). They alternate in the role of the herald Leo Paul Chiarot (1,5,8,11 June) e Fabio Tinalli (4,7,9 and 12 June).
