Regio Opera Festival 2022 in Turin
The 2nd edition of the Festival in the splendid courtyard of Palazzo Arsenale, on the bill from June to September operas, concerts and dance
After the success of last year, the Teatro Regio of Turin launch the second edition of the Royal Opera Festival, on stage from 7 June to 17 September 2022 in the magnificent Courtyard of Palazzo Arsenale, an eighteenth-century building today the headquarters of the Army Training Command and Application School. Located in the center of the immense building commissioned by Carlo Emanuele III, the grandiose Cortile dell'Arsenale, inaugurated last year after extensive restoration works, proved to be an ideal summer venue for the Teatro Regio: a place of great charm in the heart of Turin, a real discovery for residents and tourists, welcomed over 20 thousand spectators (of which a third under 30) on the occasion of the first edition of the Regio Opera Festival. And the big stage under the stars will be animated again in the summer months by a rich billboard of operas, concerts, dance performances, in addition to the appointments dedicated to children and families. "Building on the positive experience of last year," he says Sebastian F. Schwarz, Artistic Director of the Teatro Regio, "I have developed a pleasant and popular program, with the intention of regaining or giving birth to the passion for opera, capable of highlighting the qualities of the Regio's artistic teams, which alongside young and talented performers who will be able to add freshness and liveliness to immortal works; a billboard designed for the joy of being outdoors and listening to great live music. The four works on the program are “Made in Regio” productions which, once again, highlight the great professionalism we have in our Theater. " Sebastian Schwarz further explains: "The second half of the 19th century is the great protagonist of the summer of 2022 with three works known to the general public (Cavalleria rusticana, Carmen, Tosca ed) and a new staging that will reveal a" gem "by Nicola De Giosa. Alongside the operas, three great concerts, an open lesson to approach choral singing and, in September, two extraordinary appointments with dance ». The Regio Opera Festival 2022 opens on Tuesday 7 June with Rustic cavalry of Pietro Mascagni, an opera that triumphantly debuted in 1890 in Rome and since then continues to be represented with unchanged success in theaters all over the world. In Turin it will be presented in the staging of Anna Maria Bruzzese, with the sets and costumes by Paolo Ventura and the lights of Lorenzo Maletto. On the podium he will go up Francesco Ivan Ciampa, at the helm of the Orchestra and choir of the Teatro Regio, the latter instructed by Andrew Dry. Protagonists on stage, Anastasia Boldyreva in the role of Santuzza, Marco Berti in that of Compare Turiddu, Misha Kiria in the part of Alfio; complete the cast Agostina Smimmero, Lucia, and Valeria Girardello, Lola. (Replicas the 9 and 11 June, 9 pm) The appointment of June 20 (6 pm) is dedicated to children and young people withOpen Day which will feature the Children's choir they students of the courses of Choral Workshop and Choral Discipline of the School of Singing of the Teatro Regio, engaged in a open lesson with the teacher Claudio Fenoglio to let everyone know about their activities, and to encourage participation. The event, organized on the occasion of the 28. Music Festival, it is free to enter. The 21, 23 and 26 June (9pm) back to opera with a masterpiece of French musical theater, Carmen of Georges Bizet. The opera, which premiered in Paris in 1875, is based on the novel of the same name by Prosper Merimée, and for the Regio Opera Festival it will be staged in a particular version that involves the inclusion of a narrator: the actor Yuri D'Agostino in the role of the composer he will tell the story and provide other news on the opera, a format successfully tested last season, curated by the same artistic director of the Teatro Regio, Sebastian F. Schwarz. On the podium, Sixth Quatrini, at the helm ofOrchestra and Chorus of the Regio, while on stage we find Ketevan Kemoklidze, protagonist in the role of Carmen, Jean-François Borras like Don José, Giuliana Gianfaldoni, Micaëla, and Zoltán Nagy, Escamillo. The direction is signed by Paolo Vettori, the scenes are from Claudia Boasso, the costumes of Laura Viglione, the lights of Lorenzo Maletto, the staging is by the Teatro Regio. To follow, the 5, 7 and 10 July (9 pm) the third opera title will be staged, also chosen from the list of the best known and most popular works: Tosca of Giacomo Puccini, one of the leaders of Italian melodrama. Based on the play of the same name by Victorien Sardou brought to success by Sarah Bernhardt, Tosca, as already Rustic cavalry, was performed for the first time at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, on 14 January 1900. At the Arsenale, Puccini's masterpiece will be presented in the new staging of the Teatro Regio, directed by Vittorio Borrelli, the scenes of Claudia Boassus, the costumes of Laura Viglione and the lights of Christian Zucaro. The teacher Stefano Ranzani will direct Orchestra, Choir is Children's choir of the Regio, instructed respectively by Andrea Secchi is Claudio Fenoglio. In the cast stands the highly acclaimed Maria Agresta, protagonist in the title role; next to her Giorgio Berrugi in the role of Cavaradossi ed Elchin Azizov in that of Scarpia. A real rediscovery is the comic opera Don Checco of Nicola De Giosa (Bari 1819 - 1885) scheduled for 26, 28 and 30 July (9 pm). Composed in 1850, Don Checco it is one of the last great successes of the funny genre of the Neapolitan school, which remained very popular until the end of the century, with numerous performances throughout Italy and abroad. The masterpiece of the Apulian composer will be staged by Mariano Bauduin, which returns to the Regio Festival after the success obtained last summer with The servant mistress is Pimpinone, while the musical direction is entrusted to Francesco Ommassini, at the helm ofOrchestra and Chorus of the Regio; protagonists in the cast, Domenico Colaianni (Don Checco), Carmine Monaco (Bartolaccio), Michela Antenucci (Fiorina), David Ferri Durà (Carletto), Vladimir Sazdovski (Roberto) and Francesco Auriemma (Gimlet Scorticone). The new staging of the Teatro Regio - in co-production with the Province of Lecce - has the sets of Claudia Boasso, the costumes of Laura Viglione and the lights of Lorenzo Maletto. Alongside the work, there will also be space for three greats concerts: the 15th of July (9 pm) Juraj Valčuha will direct theOrchestra of the Regio in a concert that ranges between cinema and dance, with music from the films of Nino Rota is Leonard Bernstein, and the compositions for ballet written by Sergej Prokofiev is Maurice Ravel; the July 29 the Chorus of the Teatro Regio directed by Andrea Secchi, with Paul Grosa at the piano, he will be involved in a program that combines a variety of atmospheres, with rarely heard compositions by Johannes Brahms, Gustav Holst, Léo Delibes is Sergej Rachmaninov; the 5th August Fabio Biondi, conductor and solo violin, will be on the podium of theOrchestra and Chorus of the Regio for an evening dedicated to the music of Giovanni Battista Viotti is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. After the August break, the September will be entirely dedicated to dance, news for the Regio Opera Festival: the8 and 10 September (8 pm) the courtyard of Palazzo Arsenale will host a couple of stars, Svetlana Zakharova, étoile del Bol'šoj and the Teatro alla Scala, e Vadim Repin, acclaimed violinist and conductor. Couple in life and in art, they will perform in the show Pas de deux for Toes and Fingers, special event between dance and concert: Vadim Repin - who will also direct theOrchestra of the Regio - will play solos of great virtuosity, some of which danced by Svetlana Zakharova in an elegant fusion of the two arts. With them, some well-known protagonists of international ballet, Mikhail Lobukhin, Denis Savi, Vjačeslav Lopatin, Jacopo Tissi, engaged in choreography from Marius Petipa to the contemporary. The 14, 15 and 17 September (8 pm), the Regio Opera Festival 2022 will close with overtime Béjart Ballet Lausanne: At the opening of the evening, the national premiere of Alors on danse ... choreography by Gil Roman, artistic director of the company, to music by György Ligeti, John Zorn, City Percussion is Bob Dylan.
