“ Musical Season 2022- 23 Friends of Music ”
TO Perugia, there Basilica of Saint Peter, ancient Cathedral of the city and fulcrum of the Benedictine complex founded even before the year one thousand, will be the evocative setting for the traditional Christmas concert of the Friends of Music, scheduled for Sunday December 18, 2022 (8.30 pm).

It will be the protagonistPerugia Chamber Orchestra directed by Enrico Bronzi, with Francesco Bolo Rossini, narrator. A famous composition by will be performed Maurice Ravel, Ma mere l'oye, Five Children's Pieces for Orchestra inspired by the stories of Perrault, of Madame d'Aulnoy is Madame Leprince de Beaumont.

The Suite was originally composed for piano four hands, dedicated to the children Jean and Mimie Godebsky, sons of friends of the composer; Ravel then prepared the orchestral version (1911) which will be heard in the concert, and subsequently created a third version for ballet.

Five pieces that make up Ma mere l'oye, Pavane ,de la belle au bois dormant (Pavana of Sleeping Beauty), Petit poucet (Thumbnail), Laideronnette, impératrice des pagodes (Laideronnette, empress of the pagodas), Les entretiens de la belle et de la bête (The conversations of the Beauty and the Beast) and Le jardin féerique (The fairy garden).

This is how the famous critic and musicologist Arrigo Quattrocchi described them: "With its long sweet and melancholic theme in the aeolian mode, the Pavane de la "Beautiful au wood dormant” sees the old woman transform into a benign fairy who lulls the sleeping beauty to sleep, and soon gives way to Petit Poucet, where a long lullaby in thirds turns and turns on itself, like Tom Thumb in search of breadcrumbs, and it is easy to catch the sudden instrumental allusion to the birds of the wood. Laideronnette, Impératrice des Pagodes it is the longest and most complex piece, in which a mysterious central section is framed by two twin sections, amusing and breezy in the evocation of the Orient: there is no shortage of the exoticisms of the pentatonic scale and the plays of piccolo, xylophone, harp and celesta, to evoke the oriental gamelan. Gently nostalgic, the accompanying waltz Les entretiens de la Belle et de la Bète – a tribute to Erik Satie and his Gymnopédies – sees the remote conversation between the candid melody of Beauty and the chromatic gurgling of the Beast, and, in the end, the magical sound instant that transforms the beast into a prince. In Le Jardin féeriquefinally, the subdued initial melody is progressively led, through ever more flamboyant sonorities, towards a true apotheosis of the imaginary, extreme satisfaction of the author's imagination. .
