ParmaDanza, “Astor - a century of tango” is staged at the Teatro Regio with the Balletto di Roma
A journey into the charismatic sounds of tango

Teatro Regio di Parma Foundation Presents

"ParmaDanza 2021 - 22"
The Company of the Ballet of Rome with "Astor"Begins a new journey among the suggestions and sounds of tango on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Astor Piazzolla (Mar del Plata, 11 March 1921), one of the most important author and musical interpreter of this art form born at the end of ' 800 in the suburbs of Buenos Aires.

Arising from the need to communicate between different cultures, languages and traditions, tango reminds us who we are, where we come from and what was the path that indissolubly united distant humanity in a common "non-place", crossing oceans and borders. The sea itself is the common thread that unites or separates new worlds and hopes: an immense space to cross where you risk getting lost; vortex of ebbs and undulatory motion that marks the rhythm of departures and returns. The key word is "courage": the one declaimed by the immortal texts of Jorge Luis Borges in his tangos and milongas, as well as that of Piazzolla, who broke the schemes of "tango viejo" to reach the "nuevo tango" that has made famous around the world.

Astor, new production of Ballet of Rome, it's a "dance concert"In which the music of Piazzolla, arranged by Luca Salvadori and performed live by the bandoneón of Mario Stefano Pietrodarchi, brilliant performer of international fame, emerge as the real protagonists in a new dance artistic harmony. A breath, a breath, almost a word, reveal to us the fragility of the Piazzolla man, but also that of all of us who have suffered today a forced distance, a dematerialized relationality, an interrupted contact, a broken life. A concert of intense, abstract choreographic actions merged into the magical wave motion of the bandoneón, from which bodies capable of expressing the audacity of a missed breath and that of a denied embrace blossom: the first act of love after an all-encompassing violence swept away, except the desire to huddle and find each other again. Astor thus evokes the feelings of today's travelers of the world, the whole of humanity, to strengthen all contemporary energies, desires and palpitations.

On stage, together with the charismatic presence of Pietrodarchi and his bandoneón, eight dancers of the Ballet of Rome led by the choreographers of Valerio Longo and directed by Carlos Branca, Argentine director of international prominence who takes care of all the compositional elements of this opera / concert. The show uses the lighting design of Carlo Cerri and of the costumes of Silvia Califano, the concept is of Luciano Carratoni.
