Teatro Massimo Foundation of Palermo Presents

“ Season 2023 – 24 | Operas and ballets”
Opens with The Capulets and the Montagues of Vincenzo Bellini there Opera Season 2023/24 of the Massimo Theater of Palermo: the new production, on stage from 22 to 28 November 2023, is entrusted to the musical direction of Omer Meir Wellber, and will involve the Theater's Orchestra, Choir and Ballet.

The Israeli choreographer and director Idan Cohen signs an installation with innovative and visionary features, aided by the scenes of Riccardo Massironi, from the costumes of Edward Russian and the light design of Bambi.

"In a combination of music and dance - explains Idan Cohen - I imagined setting the work in a dystopian taxidermy museum. During the course of the action the museum, with its display cases and its reflected images, undergoes a fascinating transformation. The sand flowing in the large hourglasses that occupy the stage breaks the glass and invades the stage. What happens serves not only to offer a metaphor for the way we interact with nature and culture, but also to analyze the manipulation of young lovers in a society that idealizes and fetishizes youth, and in particular women's bodies".

The protagonist couple, Romeo and Juliet, as foreseen by Bellini, is entrusted to two female voices, with Romeo en travesti. Cohen, marrying and accentuating the indications of the score, makes the two characters of Romeo and Juliet two women who love each other and "representing different views of femininity, across a multitude of cultural perspectives and lenses".

The Russian mezzo-soprano will interpret them on stage - both making their role debuts Maria Kataeva as Romeo and the Spanish Lady Marina Monzo (returning to Palermo after the success in Don Paschal), in those of Juliet; the young Sicilian artist alternates with them Anna Pennisi, who already has good international experience like Romeo, and Frances Pia Vitale, fresh winner of the Toti Dal Monte Competition, for the role of Juliet; the rival Tybalt is Ioan Hotea, also returning to the Massimo after the performance in Don Pasquale, alternating with Mert Süngü, Turkish tenor also protagonist of the opening evening of the concert season together with Omer Meir Wellber; Capellio is played by Marco Spotti; Lorenzo da Gabriele Sagona.

Choir Master is Savior Puncture, the corps de ballet is directed by JeanSébastien Colau.
