Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento
The Haydn Orchestra, established in 1960, has a staff of over 40 members. It is a dynamic and expert training that loves to surprise the public with new and unconventional proposals.

Season

The 2023/24 Symphonic Season of the Haydn Orchestra, the third with the Artistic Direction of the composer Giorgio Battistelli: 14 concerts, with a double appointment in Bolzano and Trento, from 17 and 18 October 2023 to 11 and 12 June 2024. A composite Season , which will see internationally renowned conductors and soloists and emerging artists alternating on the podium of the Haydn Orchestra.

L'Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento was formed in 1960 both as a regional reference point for listening and music education and as an ambitious project to include Trentino-Alto Adige in European and international cultural networks. In 1977 the Orchestral Association becomes Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento, to finally assume in 2002 the status of Foundation.

From September 2021 the position of artistic director of the Haydn Orchestra is entrusted to Giorgio Battistelli. Principal Director of the Orchestra is Ottavio Dantone, while Min Chung And First Guest Director.

The Haydn Orchestra, characterized by a high artistic level and flexibility in formations, repertoire and locations, is a dynamic team with a strong identity, a cultural hub between East and West, between Central Europe and the Mediterranean.

The history of the orchestra

1960: The Haydn Symphony Orchestra was born on 24 October with the support of the regional cultural and political world. Its mission is to spread the musical culture in the area, favoring the birth of a spirit of community and participation. In November, the 40-piece Orchestra officially presents itself in Bolzano, Trento, Merano and Rovereto, under the guidance of the first permanent director Antonio Pedrotti and with the artistic direction of Andrea Mascagni.

1963: In May the Orchestra makes its first tour in Austria and Germany. It was immediately appreciated nationally for its artistic and technical quality.

1977: The Association becomes the “Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento”. In the first fifteen years of life, the Orchestra consolidated its authority by hosting various prestigious conductors.

1989: Hubert Stuppner is the new artistic director of the orchestra. He takes over from Andrea Mascagni, the historic founder who oversaw the business for the first thirty years.

2000: With the construction of the new Haydn Auditorium in Bolzano, the Orchestra finally has its own seat, after having been hosted for many years in various halls of the South Tyrolean capital. In Trento he holds concerts in the Santa Chiara Auditorium, which he inaugurated in 1985.

2002: The Haydn Orchestra assumes Foundation status, with the mission of experimenting with new forms of expression and promoting classical music in the region.

2003: Gustav Kuhn is the new Artistic Director of the Orchestra. The ten years of his mandate bring Ola Rudner as permanent director and see the quality, artistic talent and organization of the team further grow.

2007: A multi-year collaboration between the Orchestra and the Rossini Opera Festival begins, leading to numerous successes and the awarding of prestigious prizes such as the Diapason d'Or.

2013: Daniele Spini is the new artistic director of the Orchestra. Under his leadership the team expands its national and international artistic collaborations.

2014: The Estonian conductor Arvo Volmer is the new Principal Conductor of the Orchestra, a role he will occupy until 2020. After the founder Antonio Pedrotti, starting from 1977, Hermann Michael, Alun Francis, Christian Mandeal and Ola Rudner have succeeded as permanent conductors.

2015: The Foundation's activity expands with the acquisition of the title of Theater of Tradition. Its fields of activity are the symphonic season, the opera season and the Bolzano Danza Festival, under the artistic direction of Daniele Spini, Matthias Lošek and Emanuele Masi respectively.

2017: In May, the famous conductor Sir Jeffrey Tate conducts the Orchestra in his last concerts in Bolzano and Trento, with Mahler's Ninth Symphony.

2018: The collaboration between the Orchestra and La Biennale di Venezia begins, which continues to this day.

2019: Under the guidance of Korean conductor Min Chung, the Orchestra makes a tour in Japan, playing in prestigious halls such as Tokyo's Suntory Hall and Osaka's Symphony Hall. The performances in the Asian country are the first of a project that will be repeated every two years.

2021: Giorgio Battistelli is the new artistic director of the orchestra since September.
