Nicoletta Manni is the new étoile of the Teatro alla Scala
The appointment was announced live by Superintendent Dominique Meyer, for the first time from the stage
Nicoletta Manni is the new étoile of the Teatro alla Scala: the nomination was announced surprisingly on stage by the Superintendent and Artistic Director Dominique Meyer together with the Director of the Scaligero Ball Manuel Legris on November 8, 2023, at the end of the performance of Onegin by John Cranko, in which the dancer danced in the role of the protagonist Tatiana, paired with Roberto Bubbles

“Ladies and gentlemen, sorry if I interrupt the applause – the Superintendent said thanking the orchestra, director and the entire ballet company for their great work. Dominique Meyer going on stage – I thank Roberto Bolle who you all know is an icon of dance, a great master and, a quality that I appreciate, he is faithful to his theatre, La Scala. And I congratulate Nicoletta Manni, a special, fantastic dancer. I know it's not customary in this theater, but when a dancer has been shining like this among the stars for years, the rules can be changed and therefore, on Manuel Legris' proposal, I have the pleasure of giving Nicoletta the title of étoile."

For the first time in the long history of La Scala the consecration to étoile, the highest title and ambition of every dancer, was announced on stage in front of the audience, at the moment of applause: Piermarini's custom dictates that the nomination be announced the following day in the ballroom. The 'live' announcement on stage is instead a tradition of the Paris Opéra from which both Dominique Meyer and Manuel Legris come. And in recent years Legris had often chosen Nicoletta Manni to support some of the most challenging roles in both the classical and contemporary repertoire.

Salentina, 32 years old, principal dancer from La Scala since 2014, Nicoletta Manni shares the title of étoile with Roberto Bubbles, appointed in 2003.
