“ Season 2023 – 24 | Dance”
From 28 April to 5 May 2024 back to San Carlo Theater in Naples one of the most exciting ballets, Romeo and Juliet of Sergej Prokofiev, proposed in the choreographic version of Kenneth MacMillan, which has itself become a great classic.

Protagonist of the show, the Ballet of the Teatro di San Carlo directed by Clotilde Vayer, while theOrchestra del Massimo Neapolitan will be led by Paul Connelly, appreciated specialist of the dance repertoire.

Considered one of the greatest masterpieces of the Russian composer, the ballet in three acts Romeo and Juliet is faithfully based on the tragedy of the same name William Shakespeare; Prokofiev wrote the score between 1935 and 1936, and together with Sergei Radlov and Adrian Pyotrovsky he also edited the libretto.

The choreography of Kenneth MacMillan, an exemplary synthesis between neoclassical clarity and contemporary expressiveness, debuted in 1965 in London with protagonists Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, who also presented it at the San Carlo in the same year. Since then, Romeo and Juliet has become the most famous and performed creation of the Scottish dancer and choreographer, one of the greatest masters of the dance scene of the second half of the 20th century.

MacMillan re-edited his choreography several times, the last of which in 1992, shortly before his death, for the Birmingham Royal Ballet, with new sets and costumes inspired by the Italian Renaissance, designed by the very young man Paul Andrews. This is the production now being revived at the San Carlo, where it had already been revived in 2003 and then in 2022. The spectacular sets are of great visual impact and are constantly changing, alternating secret interiors with large open spaces, and the vivid costumes borrowed from fifteenth-century painters .

Prokofiev's extraordinary score, rich in emotions and descriptive details, is counterbalanced by MacMillan's engaging choreography, one of the most intense and passionate transpositions of the immortal story of the two unhappy lovers from Verona. With great attention to the expressiveness of the interpretation and the excavation of the characters, the ballet, profoundly theatrical, rich in complex technical variations and dramatic suspensions, unfolds between pas de deux of ecstatic beauty and elegance and ensemble dances of magnificent effect, with scenes of duels, dances and lively squares of people. Particular emphasis is given to human relationships, embossed with lyricism and psychological tension, without forgetting moments of Shakespearean humor, well present in Prokofiev's music: a modern action ballet which, almost sixty years after its creation, continues to enchant and excite audiences all over the world.
