“ Season 2023/24 ”
In Naples the San Carlo Theater inaugurates the Dance Season 2023/24 with the exuberant and picturesque ballet Don Quixote of Ludwig Minkus, in the precious choreography created by Rudolf Nureyev starting from that of Marius Petipa.

Étoiles, Soloists and Ballet of the Teatro di San Carlo directed byClotilde Vayer will give life to the proven production coming from Royal Swedish Opera, scheduled for the entire Christmas period: after the 'premiere' of December 23, 2023 (8pm), Don Quixote will be on stage with another seven performances until January 4, 2024.

Written for Bolshoi Theater in Moscow in 1869, the dazzling score of Ludwig Minkus inspired by the famous novel by Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote de la Mancha, is an electrifying dive into the heart of Spain, with a profusion of picturesque dances from Iberian folklore such as the jota, the fandango and the follow her; there is also no shortage of Hungarian dances, a minuet for Don Quixote and numerous waltzes.

Precisely the role of the protagonist Basilio in Don chisciotte is one of the most representative of the artistic career of Rudolf Nuriev, who danced it for the first time at the age of 21, in 1959, with the Kirov. Interpreting it also as a choreographer was a process of natural evolution: through his rereading of the best-known version of Marius Petipa, Nureyev's choreography gives the ballet a more intimate look, in which, although "life on the outside continues" (as he himself often liked to say, almost with Chekhovian echoes), the interior upheavals and emotions of the protagonists reveal themselves as powerful .

To frame them, in this production of Royal Swedish Opera, the sets and costumes designed by Nadine Baylis and lights by John B. Read; The music of Ludwig Minkus adapted from John Lanchbery are performed by the Neapolitan Massimo Orchestra conducted by Martin Yates.
