The punished dissolute or Don Giovanni, as the original title states, it is the central work of the famous trilogy born from the fertile collaboration of the Salzburg genius with the man of letters and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, in those years poet of the Imperial Theaters of Vienna in the service of Emperor Joseph II. An installation born from a dream

“I had a vision of this Don Giovanni's grandstand on a sleepless night – says the director Mario Martone. A sudden apparition, generated by who knows what psychic vortex, something between the Elizabethan theater, a Spanish arena, courtrooms: all the characters of Mozart and Da Ponte's opera lined up together, in a synchronic synthesis of the vital whole that Don Giovanni's momentum cuts through, conquers and offends everyone, actors and spectators at the same time. In the dream the grandstand progressively emptied, and the loneliness, the apparition of punishment and death, the collapse, and finally the sense of emptiness that envelops the listener in the apparently happy ending of the work came to the surface. I tried to remain faithful to that dream. The show extends towards the audience through arms that wrap around the orchestra and which is made up of a single scenographic element (the grandstand), exactly like in my other stagings of the works of the Mozart and Da Ponte trilogy. Fluid theater, therefore, and not schematized by defined images, in an attempt to make music and words reach the unconscious of the spectators. Moreover, if one wanted to take a photograph of him, Don Giovanni would be moved: how long does the action of the opera take place? How old is he? Is he young or a mature man? Questions to which it is impossible to give a certain answer. Disguises, dark places and lost doors meander throughout the score. The narrative device of this work is a labyrinth, strangely more similar to a screenplay than a theatrical plot. The show we created tries to indulge its mystery."
