San Carlo Theater Foundation Presenta

To the San Carlo Theater from 15 to 26 February 2022 the highly anticipated one goes on stage for 7 performances Aida with the pair of stars Anna Netrebko is Yusif Eyvazov in the leading roles. The famous work of Giuseppe Verdi, performed for the first time on 21 December 1871 in Cairo, will be re-proposed in historic staging of the La Fenice Theater directed by Mauro Bolognini - taken from Bepi Morassi - the scenes of Mario Ceroli and the costumes of Aldo Buti made available by the Historical Archive of the Cerratelli Foundation of Pisa.

The successful production of La Fenice, also remembered for having marked Giuseppe Sinopoli's debut as an opera conductor, was staged for the first time in 1978 and experienced several resumptions in numerous theaters in Italy and abroad. Re-proposed in 2019 on the Venetian stage, refurbished, with the updated lighting design by Fabio Barettin and choreography by Giovanni Di Cicco, now arrives in Naples under the direction of Michelangelo Mazza, on the podium debut of the Neapolitan Opera.

The vocal cast, with the star, is top notch Anna Netrebko in the role of Aida is Yusif Eyvazov in that of Radames (alternating with Liudmyla Monastyrska is Stefano La Colla in the performances of February 17, 20, 23, 26), Ekaterina Gubanova in the part of Amneris (alternating with Agnieszka Rehlis on 17, 20, 23) and Franco Vassallo like Amonasro. They complete the cast Nicolas Testé, Ramfis, Mattia Denti, The King of Egypt, Desirée Migliaccio, A priestess, and Riccardo Rados, A messenger.

Orchestra, Chorus and Ballet of the Teatro di San Carlo, the Choir instructed by José Luis Basso, the Ballet directed by Clotilde Vayer.

This is an opportunity of great interest not only for the performers on the poster, but also to get to know this particular staging live, which is the polar opposite of the Arena's blockbuster tradition, focusing on the drama of the characters with an almost 'intimistic' cut, more than on the exuberant grandeur of the environmental description.

Mario Ceroli (Castel Frentano 1938), the great sculptor and scenographer well known for his extraordinary wooden silhouettes, created a scene of strong impact, anti-naturalistic and stylized, of great evocative power: a structure divided into two superimposed levels, the upper one being the place of power and its rites, with the iconographic elements of classical Egyptology - pyramids, sphinxes - rarefied by a purification of the almost abstract sign, and the lower level that welcomes the world of the defeated in the half-light.
