“ Season 2023 -24 | Opera "
Norma' of Vincenzo Bellini back on stage at San Carlo Theater in Naples from the 12 to 20 March 2024 in a new production curated by the Australian director Justin Way, in his Neapolitan debut; the musical direction is entrusted to Lorenzo Sparrows, returning to the podium of the Neapolitan Massimo Orchestra and Chorus after the success of La sonnambula and Rigoletto.

The staging of the Teatro Real in Madrid, presented for the first time in Naples, uses scenes from Charles Edwards and of the costumes of Sue Willmington, while the lights are on Nicolas Fischtel and the stage movements of Jo Meredith.

On stage an extraordinary cast featuring protagonists Anna Pirozzi in the title role and Freddie De Thomas in that of Pollione, flanked by Ekaterina Gubanova in the part of Adalgisa and from Alexander Tsymbalyuk like Oroveso. They complete the singing company Veronica Marines, Clotilde, e Giorgi Guliashvili, Flavius; Choir Master is Fabrizio Cassi.

Norm, absolute masterpiece by Vincenzo Bellini, it is considered a cornerstone of the Italian bel canto school and one of the cornerstones of romantic melodrama. The third to last of his ten works, the two-act lyric tragedy was written in 1831 by the then thirty-year-old composer, making use of the libretto of Happy Romans, his regular collaborator. Source had been a very successful theatrical work, the drama “Norma ou L'Infanticide” by Louis-Alexandre Soumet, which had premiered in Paris in April 1831, a few months before the opera which was first performed on 26 December of the same year at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

And it is precisely at that time that the director Justin Way harks back, setting his Norma in a sort of meta-theatre at the time of the first performance, mixing nineteenth-century clothes and old-fashioned costumes and drawing parallels between the oppression of the Gauls and the oppression of Italians.

«The staging is the one staged in Madrid in March 2021 – he explains Justin Way  – With the set designer we focused the work on the original protagonist of the drama, Norma, yes, but also on an actress/entrepreneur of the time, a special woman, a sort of Sarah Bernhardt. The story of the priestess suspended between being the leader of her people and a woman in love, first, then jealous and vengeful, and finally just, therefore also becomes the story of a production in which the prima donna plays the role of Norma, living her own life as a woman. experiences. A protagonist who is unable to move from the role to her life, clearly separating the two dimensions."
