The penultimate of the symphonies written by the Austrian composer, dates back to 1822 and it owes its name to the fact that it is made up of only two movements rather than the four that traditionally constituted this form in the classical period. Schubert never heard this work of his live: it was in fact presented to the public only forty years after his death, thanks to the fortuitous discovery of the conductor Johann Herbeck.

Myung-Whun Chung has a long connection with the Maggio, consolidated since his Florentine debut with a symphony concert in March 1985. Countless shows were directed by Chung during the seasons of the Theater of which in 1987 he was appointed principal guest director, a position he will hold for the next five years. Counted among the most authoritative conductors of our time, alongside a vast symphonic repertoire, Myung-Whun Chung has conducted some operas on the Florentine stage, among which Modest Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov from the autumn of 1987 and Verdi's Simon Boccanegra remain memorable. of the following year.
