La Scala Theater Presents

The Capulets and the Montagues of Vincenzo Bellini will be staged at Teatro alla Scala of Milan from 18 January to 2 February 2022. According to the opera title of the 2021/22 bill, the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet in the suggestive Bellini version will be presented in a new production from La Scala.

To management, in place of Evelino Pidò forced to give up for reasons related to the health emergency, the Roman director Hope Scappucci, who thus becomes the first Italian woman on the podium of La Scala.

The direction is entrusted to Adrian Noble, director of the Royal Shakespeare Company for thirteen years and now making his Scala debut. The scenes are from Tobias Hoheisel, the costumes of Petra Reinhardt, the lights of Jean Kalman, the choreography of Joanne Pearce.

The protagonists in the roles of the unhappy lovers are two Bellinian reference voices: Lisette Oropesa it will be Juliet, Marianne Crebassa, mezzo-soprano en travesti, will sing the role of Romeo. They complete the cast Michele Pertusi, Lorenzo, Jinxu Xiahou, Tybalt and Jongmin Park, Capellio.

Bellini composed I Capuleti ei Montecchi, with the libretto by Felice Romani, in a very short time, just over a month, commissioned by the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, where it made its debut in the Carnival Season, on 11 March 1830 with triumphal results.
