Teatro alla Scala Foundation Presents

“ Season 2023/24 | Extraordinary concerts”
Tuesday May 7, 2024 Riccardo Chailly will stand on the podium of Teatro alla Scala to direct the Ninth Symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the first performance which took place on 7 May 1824 in Vienna, at the Teatro di Porta Carinzia. With the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro alla Scala – the latter instructed by Alberto Malazzi, a quartet of soloists consisting of the soprano will perform Polina Pastirchak, from the mezzo-soprano Wiebke Lehmkuhl, from the tenor Benjamin Bruns and the baritone Markus Werba.

A supreme masterpiece and monument of music of all time, his last Symphony - written by a now deaf Beethoven - not only revolutionized the history of music, but also has great ethical and philosophical relevance. With the final choral movement on the words of the famous Ode to Joy (An die Freude) by Friedrich Schiller, the 'Ninth' gave expression to an ideal of universal brotherhood, and it is no coincidence that it was chosen as the official anthem of the European Union .
