Milan, 2023 at La Scala begins with Schubert's 'Winter Journey', on stage the baritone Markus Werba and Michele Gamba at the piano

Sunday January 8 (20 hours) is a singing recital to kick off the 2023 programming of the Teatro alla Scala: the famous Austrian baritone will be the protagonists Markus Werba is Michele Gamba at the piano, engaged in the masterpiece of Franz Schubert, the 'Winter trip'. A true monument in the history of music, the famous lieder cycle – 24 pieces that compose it – was written in 1827 on the texts of the homonymous poetic collection of Wilhelm Müller. Powerful and enigmatic work, Winterreise it is one of the highest and most dramatic outcomes of Romanticism, with the emblematic figure of the wanderer-protagonist at the centre. An unmissable appointment with two artists much loved by the Scaliger public: Markus Werba, a very sensitive and ductile interpreter who at Piermarini ranged from Schubert, Wagner and Strauss to Cavalli, and Michele Gamba, here as a pianist, who after Scaliger's Rigoletto with Mario Martone confirmed himself among the most sought-after Italian conductors abroad, returning to the Semperoper in Dresden and making his debut at the National Opera in Washington and at the Metropolitan in New York. * (Markus Werba, photo ©Brescia & Amisano – Michele Gamba, photo Matteo Carassale)
