Chigiana Music Academy Presents

L'Chigiana Academy presents the 99th edition of the historical Season of Concerts "Micat in Vertice" which will take place in Siena from 22 November '21 to 7 May 2022: 15 appointments on the bill, with a range of proposals ranging from chamber music to symphony, from choral music to crossover projects. The concerts will take place in the two magnificent historical theaters of the city, the Theater of the Rinnovati and the Teatro dei Rozzi, as well as in Duomo it's at Saint martin for choral concerts.

The Season of the Chigiana, a reference point in the Italian and international music scene, this year is doubly special, anticipating on the one hand the expected centenary, and on the other, marking the resumption of winter concerts in attendance after the long lockdown that has prevented from running smoothly in the previous two seasons.

"The 99th Micat Season at the top, in view of the prestigious milestone of the centenary, - summarizes the artistic director Nicola Sani - presents a billboard of the highest international standing, which opens up to the plurality of musical proposals, from baroque music to multimedia innovations, with the presence of extraordinary performers, young talents and instrumental formations that will considerably enrich the cultural offer of Siena".

A rich parterre of musicians of all generations, soloists and chamber musicians, great orchestras, innovative ensembles will animate the programming: among the guests of the Season the maestro Salvatore Accardo, the baritone Luca Salsi, the pianist Marc André Hamelin, the Trio of Parma, the mezzo-soprano Laura Polverelli, the pianist Alessandro Stella, the very young cellist from Chigiano Ettore Pagano. Four orchestras will take the stage, the Toscanini Philharmonic of Parma directed by Luciano Acocella, L'Italian Chamber Orchestra driven by Accardo, L'Chamber Orchestra of the Milan Conservatory under the wand of Pietro Mianiti and the ORT-Orchestra of Tuscany with the director Alexander Cadario.

The Micat Summit Season 2021-22 will kick off as per tradition on November 22, occurrence of Santa Cecilia, with the opening concert at the Teatro dei Rinnovati entrusted to"Arturo Toscanini" Philharmonic Orchestra of Parma, led for the occasion by Luciano Acocella, renowned director and teacher of the Chigiana. Alongside the "Toscanini", one of the most famous Italian orchestras and one of the most successful on the international scene, three young solo students from the Accademia Chigiana and the International Academy of Imola will perform: Leonora Armellini at the piano, Gennaro Cardaropoli on the violin and Erica Piccotti on the cello. The concert will be entirely dedicated to Beethoven, recovering the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the birth, an anniversary that occurred in 2020 and which was severely limited by the pandemic. Two masterpieces by the Bonn master, the Symphony n. 4 in B flat major op. 60 and the Triple Concerto op. 56.

It continues on December 3 with one of the most important events of the season, the concert dedicated to the celebrations for the80th birthday of the legendary violinist Salvatore Accardo, deeply linked to the Chigiana Academy, of which he was first a very young pupil (just fourteen, in 1955), and then a teacher (for the first time from 1973 to 1981, and subsequently from 2003 to today). A precious and significant occasion to celebrate a great musician, who more than any other is the representative and ambassador of the Accademia Chigiana and its history in the world. Salvatore Accardo and his Italian Chamber Orchestra made up of students and alumni will perform music by Bottesini, greens is Silvia Colasanti, with one of his songs for the first time ever. (Teatro dei Rozzi, 9 pm)

The December 17 the expected concert of Choir of the Cathedral of Siena "Guido Chigi Saracini", training resident in Chigiana. The Choir, directed by Lorenzo Donati, presents a program centered on the choral production of Stravinsky on the occasion of 50 ° from the disappearance, completed by passages by Rachmaninov, Milhaud is Monteverdi. The concert will take place in the splendid setting of the Duomo (9 pm).

The January 14 it will be the turn of the Sienese mezzo-soprano Laura Polverelli, protagonist with the pianist Alessandro Stella of an elegant evening dedicated to the Lied and the mélodie between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with the Chansons Madécasses of Ravel, Les nuits d'été of Berlioz and Rückert Lieder of Gustav Mahler. On stage too Giulia Serio to the flute e Katya Bannik on the cello. (Teatro dei Rozzi at 9 pm)

The January 21st, the unmissable opportunity to listen to another great internationally renowned musician, the Canadian pianist Marc André Hamelin, protagonist of legendary concerts on the most renowned stages around the world. Famous for his virtuosity and attention to combining traditional and contemporary repertoire, he will hold a récital at the Teatro dei Rozzi (9 pm), with music by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Beethoven, Prokofiev is Skrjabin.

The February 4th a very welcome return, that of the Trio di Parma, one of the most successful chamber ensembles on the international scene. Formed by Ivan Rabaglia to the violin, Enrico Bronzi on the cello e Alberto Miodini at the piano (former students of the Chigiana), the Trio has recently celebrated the first 30 years of their career. At the Teatro dei Rozzi (9 pm) he presents i Trio n. 3 of Mauricio Kagel and the Trio with piano in A min. op. 50 of Tchaikovsky.

The February 18 (Teatro dei Rozzi at 9 pm), space for young Chigiani talents, authentic heart of the musical and training tradition of the Accademia Chigiana, which has always been careful to offer career opportunities to young Italian musicians. The cellist will go up on stage Hector They pay, talent of sure future, which will propose - with Monica Cattarossi at the piano - two of the most exciting authors of the twentieth century, Kodály is Prokofiev.

The February 25, in the midst of the atmosphere of Carnival, evening of entertainment in a Baroque style with the ensemble "Italian Soqquadro”, One of the most original formations of the European musical panorama in the Classical Crossover genre, which will propose his own Who's afraid of Baroque? (Is Chia afraid of the Baroque?) Unusual and fun insight into the Italian music and culture of the seventeenth century signed by Claudio Borgianni is Vincenzo Capezzuto. (Teatro dei Rozzi at 9 pm).

L'March 11th space a Bad boys, a new production signed by the Chigiana Academy and proposed in first ever, dedicated to musical and technological innovation and its roots in the twentieth century with two great interpreters of today: the Italian Manuel Zurria on flute and the Belgian Stephane Ginsburgh at the piano, with the multimedia direction of Thomas Chancellors. (Teatro dei Rozzi at 9 pm)

The March 18 another evening dedicated to young people, with theChamber Orchestra of the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan directed by Peter Mianites. The Orchestra, founded in 2018 and directed from the beginning by Mianiti, is unique in Italy and constitutes a bridge between the world of studies and the professional world. On the program, again at the Teatro dei Rozzi at 9 pm, music by Schubert, Schoenberg is Wagner.

The March 24, this time at the Teatro dei Rinnovati, the famous baritone Luca Sauces - permanent presence in the main international opera houses and concert halls - will be engaged in an exciting recital that will celebrate another anniversary: the centenary of birth of the Sienese baritone Ettore Bastianini (1922-1967), one of the greatest interpreters of the opera scene of all time. The evening also sees the participation of the mezzo-soprano Laura Polverelli, on the piano it will be Milo Martani.

L'April 8 L'Ensemble Tabula Rasa, direct training from Stefano Battaglia rapidly establishing itself on the national and international scene, will offer the public its new production "Matter", A project that unites Chigiana Academy and Siena Jazz in a dialogue between different cultures and musical genres. In Holy Week, the Chorus “Guido Chigi Saracini": the April 14 at the Teatro dei Rozzi (9 pm) will propose the Concert on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of César Franck. Scheduled for the Mass op. 12 by Franck, which is characterized by its vocal and instrumental solemnity, preceded by sacred passages by Rossini is Mendelssohn. Directs Lorenzo Donati, with Matilde Agosti on the cello, Vieri-Marco Giovenzana on the double bass, M. Chiara Fiorucci, harp and Guglielmo Pianigiani, piano.

The April 15, Good Friday, the second concert of Chorus “Guido Chigi Saracini"Always with the guidance of Lorenzo Donati, will take place at the Church of San Martino at 10 pm. We will listen to i motets for a cappella choir by Tomás Luís de Victoria, a perfect synthesis between the Spanish tradition and the Roman School.

The final concert of Micat In Vertice 2021-2022 will see on the stage of the Teatro dei Rinnovati on Saturday May 7, the return of the ORT - Orchestra of Tuscany, directed by Alessandro Cadario (also a former student of the Accademia Chigiana) and flanked by an extraordinary group of soloists with Lorenza Borrani on the violin, Enrico Dindo on the cello and Peter De Maria at the piano, for an evening of great intensity with the participation of Giovanni Scifoni, narrator. On the program three absolute masterpieces of the symphonic repertoire between romanticism and the first half of the twentieth century: Rossiniana, suite for orchestra by Ottorino Respighi, Concert of the Albatro for violin, cello, piano, narrator and orchestra by Giorgio Federico Ghedini e Romeo and Juliet overture-fantasy by Tchaikovsky.


Founded in the early decades of the twentieth century, the “Micat in Vertice” concert season, one of the longest-running Italian music festivals, takes its name from the motto of the Chigi-Saracini-Lucherini family. Established in Siena in 1923 by Count Guido Chigi Saracini and close to its centenary, it represents the initial nucleus of the musical activities that led to the creation of the Chigiana Academy (in 1932), as well as the start of musical life at Palazzo Chigi-Saracini, extraordinary forge of creation and musical interpretation.
