Mascagni Festival 2021 in Livorno
#Musicasalmastra the theme of the 2nd edition of the festival directed by Marco Voleri
#Musica brackish music, this is the title chosen for the 2nd edition of the Mascagni Festival in Livorno, staged from 25 July to 16 September with a varied program. “Music colors the eyes of the beholder and remains unmistakable in some corner of the mind. A bit like swimming in the sea in summer. We go out, dry and the brackish remains on the skin, reminding us of the sea that hosted us for a few moments. The same happens with music: it hosts, remembers, protects. Now it exalts, now it saddens. " , so affirms the artistic director of the festival Marco Voleri, who continues “An event that will do everything to remain on the skin and in the eyes of the listener. It will be a journey into Mascagni music, with contaminations now modern, now on the Listziano style. A journey into Mascagni's compositions and the places he lived: from piazza delle Erbe to Castel Sidney Sonnino, from Lake Alberto to the Mascagni terrace, passing from the shallows of Meloria to the Terme del Corallo. A journey into music full of debuts and world premieres. " The event, promoted by the Municipal Administration of Livorno and the Goldoni Theater Foundation, was born with the intention of paying homage to a man and artist counted among the greatest exponents of realism in music with all his innovative power. A charge made its own by the festival with its desire to relaunch culture and live music, and with an eye also open to new and unusual artistic worlds. Convinced of the porosity of borders, the Mascagni Festival proposes appointments not only with the music of the composer from Labron, but also extends to lap other genres and authors, and includes the universe of the word, in a fruitful and innovative dialogue (between the arts). At the center of the Festival also the figure of the "woman" - Mascagni was in fact also a character who dictated the fashions of his time, and who already at the time had gained the fame of "influencer" of the female universe. (see our in-depth '12 news and curiosities about Pietro Mascagni "www.concertisticlassica / 12news-and-curiosities-about-pietro-mascagni) The program of the Mascagni Festival 2021 includes 18 appointments in all, 12 in the main program in Livorno, three in section #mascagnifuoriporta and three for #terremascagniane. Leading names on the bill are the conductors Beatrice Venezi is Gianna Fratta, respectively driving theOrchestra of Tuscany for the lyric-symphonic concert 'From Mascagni to Morricone' (3 September) and theOrchestra of the Goldoni Theater for the performances of 'L'amico Fritz' (31 July - 1 August), Michele Placido which will open the festival with the concerted monologue 'Mascagni e il mare' (25 July), Danilo Rea for the concert in dialogue with Mascagni (4 September). The program in detail: The July 25 (10pm) with the world premiere of the concerted monologue "Mascagni and the sea", hero Michele Placido, on the piano Gabriele Baldocci, dancer Daniela Maccari, dramaturgy by Chiara A. Ridolfi, musicological consultancy Fulvio Venturi. The monologue, consisting of three short acts, is designed to celebrate and describe Mascagni's profile, narrating his life and his art observed from an original and suggestive angle, such as his relationship with the sea that bathes the city in which he is born and lived. The event, scheduled to take place three miles from the Livorno coast, in the Secche della Meloria, a seascape of incredible naturalistic beauty, full of life and colors, with spectators watching from the boats, due to the sea bulletin that indicates adverse conditions, it will be held instead in the historic Fortezza Vecchia in Livorno. Strong wind and rough sea are common and frequent elements in the city that gave birth to the composer from Livorno, but the challenge that was launched by the artistic director of the Mascagni Festival Marco Voleri does not lose that flavor of #musicasalmastra and suggestions: "The initial choice delle Secche della Meloria certainly characterized a natural stage, ideal for gathering and letting one perceive those sensations so strongly linked to the sea that one has when listening to Mascagni's music. The inevitable move of the opening night to the Old Fortress - continues Voleri - enhances the traditions of Livorno a stone's throw from the Medici port and does not change the strong relationship that the Festival wants to maintain with the sea. The sounds, colors, places of tradition and history that characterize the territory will be enhanced and made unique also thanks to the Festival. " The show will be preceded by the passage and parking of the Palinuro School Ship, which will be the protagonist at the inauguration of the Festival to honor the 140th anniversary of the founding of the Naval Academy of Livorno. At 8.45 pm in front of the Mascagni Terrace the Veliero will offer the ceremony of the lowering of the flag with the “a cappella” performance of the hymn by Mameli; when the sun goes down the Palinuro will wear the Tricolor and will slowly head towards the Old Fortress, where it will fit into a splendid natural setting. It continues on July 31 and August 1 (9.30 pm) at Lake Alberto di Guasticce, the staging of "Friend Fritz", Lyric comedy by Mascagni, with libretto by P. Suardon, with the Orchestra of the Goldoni Theater of Livorno directed by Gianna Fratta, directed by Giulia Bonghi. The August 13 on the Lungomare di Livorno, the "Mascagni Night", A pleasant musical walk from Ardenza to Antignano, with the soloists of the Mascagni Festival, followed by several opera concerts: the August 18 at the Fortezza Vecchia, with the soloists of Jerusalem Opera Studio, stage of the Israeli opera academy at the Livorno event, the August 20 at the Fortezza Nuova with the soloists of the Puccini Academy of the Puccini Festival of Torre del Lago; the August 24 in Castel Sonnino, it will be the turn of the singers of the Mascagni Academy for the concert with narrator "Verismo at the Castle”, Dedicated to the“ plebeian ”melodrama in Italian musical realism; the August 29 in piazza Cavallotti, always with the soloists of the Mascagni Academy, the concert "Under Casa Mascagni". Change of musical genre the 2 September, with the band's performance at the Terrazza Mascagni "The list representative", Well known after the exploit in Sanremo this year. Another great event of the Mascagni Festival is scheduled for 3 September (Terrazza Mascagni) when it will be a celebrity like Beatrice Venezi to drive theOrchestra of Tuscany in the symphonic lyric concert "From Mascagni to Morricone". The concert, with the participation of the soprano Francesca Maionchi, follows the common thread of great interest and not known to all, the relationship between Mascagni and cinema. Pietro Mascagni, open to experimentation and to the new, was the first Italian composer to make the soundtrack of a film, Nino Oxilia's “Satanic Rapsodia”, but it is also his compositions that have often been chosen by great film directors. Two examples among all, Raging Bull, Martin Scorsese's masterpiece played by Robert De Niro, and The Godfather, part III, in which events precipitate towards tragedy during an emblematic representation of the rustic Cavalry. The September 4th, a remarkable crossover proposal with jazz pianism by Danilo Rea, which meets in its own way the compositions of Mascagni for an unprecedented musical dialogue. (Mascagni Terrace) The September 16, closing of the Mascagni 2021 Festival with the Fanfare of the State Police on the Mascagni Terrace, with a classic and modern repertoire. The rich program is completed by the appointments of #mascagnifuoriporta and #terremascagniane: For #mascagnoutdoor, three concerts with the soloists of the Mascagni Academy that from Torre del Lago (With eyes where a soul dreamed, August 16) and Bagnara di Romagna (A stage at the Opera, June 28) range up to Jerusalem (Around Mascagni, July 16) . A cycle of events that are the zero episode of a narrative / musical journey on the figure of Mascagni in the world, made up of the voice, skill and talent of the soloists of the Mascagni Academy, a highly specialized academy for opera singers that has been proposed since his first edition to discover and enhance new interpreters. #terremascagnane, a project launched this year as a fil rouge between the Mascagni Festival and the breathtaking places of the Livorno province, aims to carry out events in the entire Livorno province in the coming years, combining tourism and culture. Three events on the calendar, all with the soloists of the Mascagni Academy, 'Melodie salmastre' (Campiglia Marittima, 7 July), 'Viaggio nella lirica' (Bolgheri, 3 August), 'Mimì and the others' (Bibbona, 10 August) .

News on Pietro Mascagni   Thus the Mascagni Festival introduces the composer: Not just Cavalleria rusticana. Pietro Mascagni (Livorno 1863 - Rome 1945) is an artist who marked the history of music from the end of the nineteenth century to the second half of the twentieth century. A genius who became famous from an early age when at the age of 27 he won the competition of the Sonzogno music publishing house, transforming Verga's novella into an opera and writing a crucial page of Italian musical realism. Yet Mascagni is in some ways a “forgotten” genius, associated only with Cavalleria rusticana (1890) which still enters with both hands in the lyrical posters of theaters all over the world. The master from Livorno, where he was born in 1863 and where he began his musical training, was a prolific composer, renowned conductor, representative of Italy in numerous international musical fora, experimenter of scores for cinema (for which he wrote the first Satanic Rhapsody soundtrack, which he was always particularly proud of). And then a friend of Puccini, a close friend of D'Annunzio (a partnership from which Parisina sprang), linked by a personal relationship with Pope Pius XII. He is the author of 15 works (including L'Amico Fritz, Guglielmo Ratcliff, Iris, Lodoletta), the operetta Sì, symphonic scores, numerous works of sacred music (including the “Messa di Gloria”), and other compositions. In short, an artist to be rediscovered.   * For news and curiosities on Mascagni see www.concertisticlassica.com/12notizie-e-curiosita-su-pietro-mascagni/.
