Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Symphonic Opera Season 2021-22
Ten operas, twenty concerts, four guest orchestras make up the rich program of the Maggio

Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Foundation Presents

The very rich billboard 2021-2022 of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino presents ten works (plus two reductions for children), 20 concerts (19 symphonic concerts and the Christmas concert of children's voices), four guest orchestras, moreover the tour elinauguration of the new Auditorium in December.

The season of operas and concerts kicks off on August 28 to end on April 9, 2022, just before the opening of the 84th May Festival scheduled for April 12th.

Of note is the appointment of Daniele Gatti to principal director of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra with a three-year assignment from 2022 to 2025.

Remain well present on the bill Zubin Mehta, honorary director for life del Maggio, which will go up on the Florentine podium a little less than thirty times for the opera and symphonic season, as well as lead the orchestra on a dozen tour dates. The three operas will be staged under his baton The Traviata, Fidelio is The bat (while he will not conduct as originally announced, So do all of them at the opening of the season where there will be Ádám Fischer) and ten concerts of the symphonic season, among which the inaugural concert of the new Auditorium on 21 December stands out.

They will also go up on the podium, for the opera season, John Eliot Gardiner, Diego Fasolis, Riccardo Frizza, Ádám Fischer, Michele Gamba, Francesco Ivan Ciampa. For the concert season, Riccardo Muti, Daniele Gatti, Manfred Honeck, John Eliot Gardiner, Valery Gergiev, Charles Dutoit, Klaus Mäkelä, Ingo Metzmacher, Philippe Jordan, James Conlon, Franz Welser-Möst.

The opera direction is entrusted to Sven-Eric Bechtolf, Davide Livermore, Cesare Lievi, Chiara Muti, Matthias Hartman, Josef E. Köpplinger, Rosetta Cucchi, while the list of singers is very long - to name just a few, Thomas Hampson, Francesco Meli, Leo Nucci, Plácido Domingo, Asmik Grigorian, Jessica Pratt, Amartuvshin Enkhbat, Valentina Naforniţă, Nadine Sierra, Nicola Alaimo, Lise Davidsen, Peter Seiffert, Markus Werba.

Among the soloists in concerts, the names of Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Hélène Grimaud.

The director of the Maggio Choir is Lorenzo Fratini.

Guest orchestras are theOrchestra of the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg, L'Mozart Orchestra, L'Cherubini Orchestra, L'Montecarlo Orchestra.

Opera Season

All new opera staging, only So do all of them is Linda of Chamounix were staged in the theater for filming and streaming, but never seen by the audience in the hall.

Symphonic Season

20 the appointments of the concert season del Maggio: 19 symphonic concerts and one with the Voci Bianche choir.

Of the 19 symphonic concerts With the'Orchestra of the Maggio, 10 I'm directed by Zubin Mehta, of which 5 of Beethoven cycle (25 and 29 September, 7 and 15 October, 4 January),  one dedicated to The creation by Haydn (November 24). one with the soprano Asmik Grigorian (October 28), one with Maurizio Pollini (January 19), the Opening concert of the new Auditorium (21 December), the End concert year (December 31st). Also there will be one open test of Schubert's Symphony La Grande ' October 27.

The remaining ones 9 concerts will be directed 1 by Manfred Honeck (1st October) 1 from John Eliot Gardiner (October 21), 1 from Klaus Mäkelä (December 16) 1 from Ingo Metzmacher (February 5th), 1 from Philippe Jordan (February 19), 1 from James Conlon (February 26), 1 from Daniele Gatti (March 11th), and 2 from Franz Welser-Möst (6 and 10 April), while the announced 92-year-old will not be there Christoph von Dohnányi.

Complete the program on Christmas concert with the Choir of White Voices del Maggio directed by Lorenzo Fratini and the participation of the Astrolabio Ensemble Music Group (December 18).

Opera Season

So do all of them 
To open the 2021-22 Season, the new staging of the work So do all of them of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with the direction of Ádám Fischer acclaimed Mozart interpreter, and directed by Sven-Erich Bechtolf. In the cast the important voices of Valentina Naforniţa (Fiordiligi), Kate Lindsey (Dorabella), Mattia Olivieri (William), Matthew Swensen (Ferrando), Benedetta Torre (Despina) e Thomas Hampson (Don Alfonso). Chorus and Orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, choir director, Lorenzo Fratini. Never seen by the audience in the hall, the new production originally scheduled to close last season, was staged behind closed doors under the direction of Zubin Mehta last March 28 to be resumed and broadcast in streaming.

First performance August 28, 2021, reruns 30 August, 1 and 3 September </ p> The Traviata
Zubin Mehta conducts the second opera, The Traviata of Giuseppe Verdi, in a new sixty-eight setting designed by David Livermore. In the role of Violetta the soprano Nadine Sierra, making his debut as both Violetta and Maggio; in the role of Alfredo, Francesco Meli and in Germont's they will alternate Leo Nucci is Placido Domingo. Linda of Chamounix
On stage a Traviata alternates - finally live, after the appreciable January streaming - Linda of Chamounix of Gaetano Donizetti. The opera, never performed in the May seasons, is directed by the young man Michele Gamba directed by Cesare Lievi at the Florentine debut. In the cast two stars of Belcanto like Jessica Pratt (Linda) e Teresa Iervolino (Pierotto), then the tenor Francesco Demuro in the first play followed by Giulio Pelligra (Carlo) in the other performances, Vittorio Prato (Antonio), Marina De Liso (Magdalene), Fabio Capitanucci (Marquess of Boisfleury), Michele Pertusi (prefect) e Antonio Garés (a steward). The sets and costumes are by Luigi Perego, the lights of Gigi Saccomandi.

First performance 21 September, reruns 23, 30 September is October 3

The lyric program continues with Rigoletto of Giuseppe Verdi, also this a new staging never seen live. On the podium Riccardo Frizza directed by Davide Livermore, who signs like this - later Traviata - the second work of the 'Popular trilogy'verdiana which will conclude with The Troubadour, expected in the 2022/23 season. In the eponymous role, the baritone Amartuvshin Enkhbat, Mariangela Sicily will be Gilda, Piero Pretti the Duke of Mantua. With them Caterina Piva (Magdalene), Alessio Cacciamani (Sparafucile), and a group of singers trained at the Accademia del Maggio for the other roles. The scenes are from Giò Forma, Gianluca Falaschi signs the costumes, the lights are taken care of by Antonio Castro, videos from D-wok.

First performance on October 19, reruns 22 and 24 October

The highly anticipated new staging of Falstaff, extreme masterpiece of Giuseppe Verdi, debuts on November 19th under the baton of one of the greatest conductors of our times, John Eliot Gardiner. The direction is entrusted to Sven-Erich Bechtolf (with his regular collaborators, Julian Crouch for the scenes, Kevin Pollard, costumes, Alex Brok, lights and Josh Higgason to videos). Nicola Alaimo he plays the protagonist Sir John Falstaff, one of his most acclaimed roles which earned him an Abbiati Award in 2016. With him Simone Piazzola (Ford), Matthew Swensen (Fenton), Christian Collia (Dr. Cajus), Antiono Garès (Bardolfo), Gianluca Burstto (Pistol). Ailyn Pérez will be Alice Ford, Sara Mingardo Mrs. Quickly, Caterina Piva will be Meg Page and Francesca Boncompagni will be Nannetta.

First performance November 19, reruns 21, 23 November is 3, 5 December

Madama Butterfly
From 9 December it finally goes on stage Madama Butterfly of Giacomo Puccini in the new staging of Chiara Muti with the direction of Francesco Ivan Ciampa, production put on the bill in November last year and postponed due to the pandemic. The scenes are from Leila Fteita, the costumes of Alessandro Lai, the lights of Vincent Longuemare. Butterfly will be Svetlana Aksenova who has triumphed in the role in Zurich, Berlin, Stuttgart, London, Munich. In the role of Pinkerton Sergej Skorokhodov, star of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg; Laura Verrecchia will be Suzuki, Alessandro Luongo will be Sharpless and with them Alessio Cacciamani (uncle Bonzo), Paolo Antognetti (Goro), Francesca Cucuzza (Kate Pinkerton), André Courville (prince Yamadori), Francesco Venuti (Commissioner).

First performance December 9, reruns 12, 14, 17 and 19 December

Also in December, immediately after the solemn inauguration with the concert directed by Zubin Mehta on the 21st, the new production of the Fidelio of Ludwig van Beethoven. On the podium Zubin Mehta, while the direction is entrusted to Matthias Hartmann who imagined a scene with cloths and veils on which the famous images of the Prisons by Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Florestan will be Peter Seiffert, Don Pizarro will be Tomasz Konieczny, Leonore will be played by Lise Davidsen, soprano among the most requested of the moment in this repertoire, alternating with Elisabeth Strid she too highly acclaimed interpreter, Rocco will be the famous bass Franz Josef Selig and Marzelline will be Francesca Aspromonte.

Fidelio, the only opera in the Beethoven catalog, had three versions. The definitive one, after eleven years of work and second thoughts, was staged in 1814 in Vienna, finally finding positive feedback.

Die Fledermaus (The bat)
Co-produced with the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, the new staging of the Bat of Johann Strauss jr opens the new year on January 16 with a dip in the joyful musical verve of nineteenth-century Vienna. Directs Zubin Mehta, direction and lighting are by Josef Ernst Köpplinger, the scenes of Rainer Sinell, costumes of Alfred Mayerhofer. In the cast Markus Werba (Gabriel von Eisentstein), Valentina Naforniţă (Rosalinde), Giorgio Berrugi (Alfred), Regula Mühlemann (Adele), Reinhard Mayr (Frank), Marina Viotti (Orlofsky), Liviu Holender (Falke); Daniel Prohaska (Blind), Miriam Albano (Ida). Tobias Moretti, famous Austrian actor also well known in Italy for his participation in the TV series “Il Commissario Rex”, will be the reciting voice in the role of Frosch.

First performance January 16, replies the 18, 20, 21, 23.

The husband of three and the husband of none
Still at the Auditorium, on January 22nd there will be a rarity of Luigi Cherubini, The husband of three and the husband of none. Scheduled for the inauguration of the May 2020 Festival, the opera - never staged in Florence - is now included on the bill with the intention of bringing this extraordinary composer, Florentine by birth, highly appreciated by Beethoven, then maximum musical authority in France as director of the Paris Conservatory.

The new layout of the Maggio will see on the podium Diego Fasolis, directed by Cesare Lievi, sets and costumes by Luigi Perego and the lights of Gigi Saccomandi. In the vocal cast, Sara Blanch (Donna Lisetta), Ruzil Gatin (Don Martino), Fabio Capitanucci (Don Pistacchio), Arianna Vendittelli (Donna Rosa), Mattia Olivieri (Don Simone), Benedetta Torre (Bettina) e Giulio Mastrototaro (Elf).

The opera, the only one that Cherubini wrote for Venice, is a playful drama in two acts with a libretto by Filippo Livigni and made its successful debut at the San Samuele Theater in November 1783. Cherubini, at the time in his early twenties, experimented with a genre unusual for him, creating a divertissement in line with the tradition of the Neapolitan school full of wit and panache.

The friend Fritz
The 2021-22 season ends - just before the start of the 84th Maggio Musicale Festival - with The friend Fritz of Pietro Mascagni, the latest title on the bill. The opera, staged from 1 to 12 March, has been missing since May for over 80 years when it was directed by Mascagni himself. The new staging directed by Rosetta Cucchi will be directed by Riccardo Frizza. In the main roles they sing Charles Castronovo (Fritz Kobus), Salome Jicia (Suzel) e Teresa Iervolino (Beppe the Gypsy).

First performance March 1st, replies the 3, 6, 9 and 12.


Symphonic Season

The Symphonic Season of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino - the concert of the Beethoven Cycle directed by Zubin Mehta scheduled for 10 September due to an indisposition of the Maestro - postponed to 15 October - opens with two prestigious concerts by the guest orchestras:

The September 12 Daniele Gatti directs the Orchestra Mozart in a program with music by Igor Stravinsky (Apollon Musagète, ballet in two scenes) e Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Symphony in C major K. 551, Jupiter and Symphony concertante in E flat major K. 364 for violin, viola and orchestra).

The September 13 Riccardo Muti, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri, directs theLuigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra with the participation ofOrchestra and Choir of the Maggio in a concert with music by Tigran Mansurian (Purgatory - Commission of the Ravenna Festival), Franz Liszt (Dante-Symphonie S 109), and Giuseppe Verdi (Praise to the Virgin Mary) There will be for the Mansurian piece on the cello John Sollima.

On 25 and 29 September the Beethoven cycle with the direction of Zubin Mehta: the September 25 Symphonies n. 1 in C major op. 21, n. 2 in D major op. 36 and n. 4 in B flat major op. 60; the September 29 Symphony n. 7 n the major op. 92, the Overture from Fidelio, and by Gustav Mahler the Adagio from Symphony no. 10.

L'1st October will be on the podium Manfred Honeck with songs by Arvo Pärt - Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten-, György Ligeti with the double Concerto for flute, oboe and orchestra (flute Henrik Wiese, oboe Tobias Vogelmann) and to close the symphony n. 5 in E minor op. 64 of Pëtr Il'ič Tchaikovsky.

Two other appointments of the Beethoven cycle with Zubin Mehta, which will address the October 7 the famous 'Pastoral' Symphony n. 6 op. 68, and of Franz Joseph Haydn the Missa in tempore belli (also called Paukenmesse), while the October 15 it will be the turn of the Symphony n. 3 in E flat major 'Eroica' and the Symphony n. 5 in C minor op. 67.

The October 21 John Eliot Gardiner, who will return in November for the performances of Falstaff, will be leading the Orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino for the third time, designing a substantial program: The witch of noon, op. 108 and the Symphony n. 5 in F major op. 76, both of Antonín Dvořák and the Symphony n. 2 in B flat major D 125 of Franz Schubert.

The October 27 the teacher Zubin Mehta in a open test of the Symphony 'La Grande' by Franz Schubert will allow the public to follow his work with the Orchestra; the piece will then be proposed as part of the European tour starting on October 30th.

The next day, October 28, will still be Zubin Mehta to direct of Alban Berg Drei Bruchstücke aus Wozzeck with the soprano Asmik Grigorian, and the Symphony n. 9 in D minor by Anton Bruckner.

The November 24 the oratory for soloists, choir and orchestra is on the bill The Creation (Die Schöpfung) by Franz Joseph Haydn, soloists Mandy Fredrich soprano, Bernard Richter tenor, Markus Werba low and Vera Pilipenko, mezzo-soprano, on the podium Zubin Mehta.

L'December 11th will be the evening dedicated toOrchestra of the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg directed by Valery Gergiev, scheduled for Sergej Prokofiev the suite from Romeo and Juliet, The wonderful mandarin, op. 19 of Béla Bartók and Petruška from Igor Stravinsky.

The December 16 the young Finnish director Klaus Mäkela he will conduct the Maggio Orchestra in an evening dedicated to Bruch (Concerto in G minor op. 26 for violin and orchestra, soloist Daniel Lozakovich) And Mahler (Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor).

The December 18 the Choir of the White Voices of May directed by Lorenzo Fratini will propose a Christmas Concert.

The December 21, 2021 it will come inaugurated the new Auditorium of the Teatro del Maggio with a solemn concert in the presence of the Head of State Sergio Mattarella. On the podium of the Maggio Choir and Orchestra, the director for life Zubin Metha with an emblematic program: the Glory Mass of Giacomo Puccini, the Te Deum in C major than Anton Bruckner, and the world premiere - commissioned by the Maggio Fiorentino - of the composition of Luca Francesconi 'For the body of light' dedicated to Dante's Comedy.

The end-of-year concert follows on December 31st, with the teacher Zubin Mehta to lead the teams of the Maggio in a Beethovenian program, the Symphony n. 8 op. 93 and the Symphony n. 9 which greets the new year with the famous Hymn to Joy. Soloists the soprano Mandy Fredrich, the mezzo-soprano Marie-Claude Chappuis, the tenor AJ Glueckert and the bass Franz-Josef Selig.

At the end of the concert it is possible to participate in the program for the New Year's Eve organized in the spaces of the Theater by purchasing the gala dinner.

The same concert with the same cast will be repeated on January 4, 2022 at the end of Beethoven cycle.

The January 10 the Teatro del Maggio will host the'Montecarlo Orchestra directed by Charles Dutoit with an exceptional soloist, Martha Argerich, who will be at the piano for the Concerto in G major of Maurice Ravel, while the evening's program is completed with the Spring Festival of Stravinsky.

The January 19 another piano legend will be on stage, Maurizio pollen. Back on the podium Zubin Mehta, the Symphony n. 4 op. 120 of Schumann, the Overture of the Magic Flute and the Concerto K 595 for piano and orchestra by Mozart.

The February 5th the German director Ingo Metzmacher directs a program with music by Busoni (Berceuse élégiaque, op. 42), Mozart (Concerto in G major K. 216 for violin and orchestra), Bruckner (Symphony No. 2 in C minor), on the violin Thomas Zehetmair.

The February 19 the Swiss will lead the Orchestra del Maggio Philippe Jordan with Beethoven (Coriolan, overture), Bruckner (Symphony No. 7 in E major) and the Altenberg Lieder by Alban Berg interpreted by the soprano Anja Kampe.

The February 26, appointment with James Conlon on the podium of the Maggio Orchestra in a program yet to be defined.

L'March 11th come back Daniele Gatti to direct, of Gabriel Fauré, the suite with incidental music op. 80 Pelléas et Mélisande, the suite from Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev, and the Concerto in A minor op. 54 for piano and orchestra by Robert Schumann with Hélène Grimaud at the piano.

At the end of the season, on April 6 and 10, two concerts conducted by Franz Welser-Möst. The great director, for the first time in May, the April 6 will perform the Symphonies n. 2 in B flat major D 125 and n. 3 in D major D 200's Schubert and the Concerto for cello and orchestra by Robert Schumann, while the April 10 the Mass in E flat major D. 950 of is scheduled Schubert.


The May of the boys

There are two titles reserved for very young spectators and schools: The elixir of love (for children) by Gaetano Donizetti with the direction of Grischa Asagaroff and the musical elaboration and arrangement of Alexander Krampe, in the preparation of Teatro alla Scala he was born in May Florentine, which will be staged under the direction of Gianna Fratta the 17, 23 and 24 October.

Second title, So fan all, love is a game, taken from the opera Cosi fan tutti by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Direction and scenic writing are by Manu Lalli, the adaptation and the original music by Luca Giovanni Logi, directs Pietro Mazzetti. The Maggio staging is in co-production with Bright Winds, protagonists 80 young people of the project “All'Opera… in campo!”. World premiere on November 14, reruns in the days 18, 20, 24 and 25.
