Macerata Opera Festival
The Macerata Opera Festival, one of the major Italian opera festivals, is also known for its particularly suggestive venue, the neoclassical .Sferisterio. After a first triumphal staging of the Aida in 1921, the festival began in 1967. It is currently promoted by the Arena Sferisterio Association, set up by the Municipality and the Province of Macerata.

The Sferisterio of Macerata, nestled in the historic heart of the city, near the Porta Picena, represents a unique structure in the Italian open-air theater panorama. This semi-elliptical space, originally conceived for the bracelet ball game, popular in the 19th century, was later transformed into a prestigious stage for concerts and opera performances, known for the exceptional acoustics that have always enchanted singers and orchestra conductors .

Designed in 1823 by the neoclassical architect Ireneo Aleandri, the Sferisterio opened its doors to the public in 1829, as evidenced by the inscription on the entrance. With a capacity ranging from 2,500 to 3,000 spectators, including the balcony, the Sferisterio has become famous since 1967 for its summer opera season.

The festival has seen a significant evolution over the years, transforming into the Sferisterio Opera Festival in 2006 under the guidance of artistic director Pier Luigi Pizzi. In 2012, Francesco Micheli revamped the event, renaming it the Macerata Opera Festival, a name he retained until his term as artistic director in 2017.

2006 is the year of transformation: the summer event becomes a 'Festival'. The change comes with the artistic direction of Pier Luigi Pizzi; Milanese by birth but Venetian by adoption, he is an internationally renowned director, set designer and costume designer.
