Macerata Opera Festival 2023
The myth of seduction and the leitmotif of the festival divided into five weekends Three works on the bill, Lucia di Lammermoor, Traviata and Carmen
And the myth of seduction with its iridescent facets the theme that innervates the billboard of Macerata Opera Festival 2023, on stage from 20 July to 19 August in the extraordinary setting of the Sferisterio, symbol of the city.

Arrived at the 59th edition, the Macerata Opera Festival will take place over five weekends, interweaving Opera, literature, cinema is music. Focal point of the program, the opera proposal with three titles focused on the female figure in its various forms: Lucia of Lammermoor of Donizetti, rarity for the Sferisterio, The Traviata of greens in the iconic staging of Svoboda, the most famous production of the Macerata repertoire, and the very popular Carmen of Bizet.

And the proposals also revolve around the seductive and tragic Sevillian cigarette girl cinema is dance, accompanied by the award-winning show Don Juan, while it is dedicated to Requiem of greens  – created with the Teatro Comunale of Bologna – the symphonic program that completes the rich program curated by the superintendent Flavio Cavalli and the artistic director Paul Pinamonti.

Built in the first half of the 19th century for the ball game, a very fashionable sport at the time, the Sferisterio of Macerata it hosted the first opera performance just over a hundred years ago, in 1921, and today it attracts an audience of enthusiasts from all over the world.

The grandiose Arena, like every summer, will be the evocative stage of 59° Macerata Opera Festival, that inaugurates Thursday July 20, 2023 with a new production of Carmen of Georges Bizet. On the podium he will go up Donated Renzetti, musical director of the festival, while signing the direction Daniele Menghini, with scenes from Davide Signorini and the costumes of Nika Campisi. The set-up will appeal to the typical symbols of Spanish culture to transform the Sferisterio into a large bullring. The protagonist will be the intense mezzo-soprano Ketevan Kemoklidze, with Guys Eldin like Don Josè, also a very interesting emerging tenor, and again Roberta Mantegna (Micaëla) e Fabrizio Beggi (Escamillo). Third title in chronological order, Lucia of Lammermoor of Donizetti (12, 14, 17 and 19 August), which arrives in an important new production co-produced with the Chorégies d'Orange, a French town famous for its imposing Roman theater where a very similar festival takes place every summer, especially for the monumental place, to that of Macerata. In the cast, internationally renowned bel canto singers such as Ruth Iniesta (Lucia), Dmitry Korchak (Edgard) and David Luciano (Henry), led by Francis Ivan Ciampa, already applauded for Macbeth in 2019. The show signed by JeanLouis grind evokes the typically romantic Scottish setting of this melodrama, which Macerata has been missing since 2003.

Alongside the three operatic titles, the Macerata Opera Festival will offer other appointments by cinema is dance inspired by the charm of Carmen, an almost archetypal figure born from the pen of Prosper Mérimée (the novella was published in 1845): a sort of "festival within the festival”, which combines the legendary with Bizet's work flamenco show Carmen (August 4) signed in 1983 by Antonio Gades is Carlos Saura proposed by Company Antonio Gades, and an evening with two milestones of silent cinema: Carmen of Cecil B. DeMille is A Burlesque on Carmen of Charlie Chaplin (August 11), scored live with the baton of Timothy Brock, specialist of these repertoires.

The second appointment with dance is dedicated to the other great myth of seduction, this time declined for men: Don Giovanni, a character who, starting from the seventeenth-century version of Tirso de Molina, has undergone innumerable transpositions, and has also inspired Don Juan (July 27), a creation of the choreographer Johan Inger, Danza&Danza 2020 award, co-produced by the Arena Sferisterio Association with the National Dance Foundation / Aterballetto and a large group of other theater institutions.
