Macerata Opera Festival 2022
Opera, Cinema and Symphony for the festival at the Sferisterio
Opera, cinema is symphonic repertoire, these are the three cornerstones on which the programming of the Macerata Opera Festival 2022, on the bill from 19 July to 21 August with 22 evenings that will bring the public back under the starry sky of the Sferisterio, and two concerts scheduled at Lauro Rossi Theater.

The historical review comes to 58. edition with a new artistic and musical direction, entrust the one to Paolo Pinamonti, a musicologist with a prestigious background in the theatrical world, and the other a Donato Renzetti, among the most renowned Italian drumsticks.

After the pandemic crisis, this season the Festival returns to a complete calendar of three works: Tosca, The Barber of Seville is clowns are the titles chosen by the new artistic director Paolo Pinamonti, who signs the programming of the Macerata Opera Festival 2022 together with the superintendent Luciano Messi. Alongside the works, and it is an innovation that can attract a new audience, the symphonic repertoire with the presence of great orchestras and famous conductors, and a particular attention to cinematography.

"It will be the world of cinema - underlines Pinamonti - to unite the program of the Macerata Opera Festival 2022 on several levels".

It will in fact take place in a 1950s film set the new production of Tosca of Giacomo Puccini, which will open the operatic program and will be staged at the Sferisterio Friday 22 and Sunday 24 July, Friday 29 and Sunday 31 July. On the podium of the FORM - Marchigiana Philharmonic Orchestra the musical director Donato Renzetti will go up. The direction is entrusted to Valentina Carrasco, the sets are by Samal Blak, the costumes by Silvia Aymonino, the lights by Peter van Praet; vocal protagonists Carmen Giannattasio (Floria Tosca), Antonio Poli (Mario Cavaradossi) and Claudio Sgura (Scarpia).

The second work in the program, clowns of Ruggero Leoncavallo, new production of the 2015 exhibition, will be preceded by the projection on the wall of the Sferisterio of one of the masterpieces of Charlie Chaplin: the film The Circus in the version restored by the Cineteca di Bologna and with the first live performance after the 1928 debut, of the original soundtrack restored by Timothy Brock, an international specialist in these music and film recovery operations. In clowns Brock will direct the singers among others Rebeka Lokar (Nedda), Fabio Sartori (Cain), George Petean (Tonio). The direction is signed by Alessandro Talevi, with the sets by Madeleine Boyd, the costumes by Manuel Pedretti and the lights by Marco Giusti. On the bill on Friday 5, Sunday 7 and Thursday 11 August).

Third title will be The Barber of Seville, a funny masterpiece by the most famous and celebrated composer from the Marche region, Gioachino Rossini (Friday 12, Sunday 14, Friday 19 and Sunday 21 August), staged at the Sferisterio after almost twenty years of absence with a new staging signed by Daniele Menghini, with the sets by Davide Signorini, the costumes by Nika Campisi and the lights by Simone de Angelis, winner of the international competition for direction, sets and costumes reserved for artists under 35, created in 2020 in collaboration with Opera Europa and Rossini Opera Festival. This new Barber of Seville Sara set it too in one set, this time more from a television studio or format production company for the general public, a factory of fiction. The cast is made up of, among others Ruzil Gatin (The Count of Almaviva), Roberto De Candia (Bartolo), Serena Malfi (Rosina), Alessandro Luongo (Figaro), Andrea Concetti (Basilio).

On the podium one of the most popular young talents of the moment, Alessandro Bonato, principal director of the FORM-Marchigiana Philharmonic Orchestra which, as a tradition, will be involved in all three operatic titles at the Sferisterio. The Choir it will always be for the three titles Lyric from the Marche "Vincenzo Bellini" driven by Martino Faggiani, while I Pueri Cantores “D. Zamberletti " directed by Gianluca Paolucci will be engaged in Tosca is clowns.

The program of the first week is completed on Saturday 23 July with an evening dedicated to Pietro Mascagni and cinema: a lesser known activity of the composer from Livorno sees him as the author of film music, such as the soundtrack for the famous 1917 film Satanic rhapsody, cinepoeme inspired by Faust directed by Nino Oxilia and the star of the silent diva Lydia Borelli. Restored by the Cineteca di Bologna, the film will be screened with the original music performed live by FORM-Marchigiana Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Marcello Panni, who also oversaw the revision of the score. Also three are scheduled interludes mascagnani from the works William Ratcliff, Cavalleria rusticana is Friend.

Another homage to cinema is the one proposed by Donato Renzetti, which on July 30 will direct the Gioachino Rossini Philharmonic in the concert for i 90 years of John Williams, five times Academy Award winner, celebrated author of unforgettable soundtracks, including Star Wars.

The symphonic repertoire with orchestras and conductors of great prestige, with a focus on Beethoven:

to open the Macerata Festival, the concert ofOrchestra and Chorus of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino directed by Zubin Mehta (July 19), committed to the essential "Not at"By Beethoven; it will then be the turn ofOrchestra of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia with Myung-Whun Chung (21 July) which will propose the Symphonies n. 6 "Pastoral" and n. 7.

The award-winning pianist Jan Lisiecki, stars of cinemas all over the world, will instead be the interpreter and director of the five Piano Concerts by the Bonn composer, with the Gioachino Rossini Philharmonic (4 and 6 August).

At the Lauro Rossi Theater there will then be the Neapolitan Chapel directed by Antonio Florio (August 18) which will perform a concert dedicated to the Marche with a collection of Litaniae Lauretanae of Mozart is Giuseppe Giordani.

The Concluding concert of the International course for young conductors and young singers that Donato Renzetti will hold in Macerata from 4 to 11 August.

The setting of the Sferisterio Arena will then be the ideal setting for an evening dedicated to Brazilian music with one of its historic stars: the singer and guitarist Toquinho (August 13) he will perform together with his band presenting a retrospective of over fifty years of success.
