The history of the Luglio Musicale Trapanese   "In 1948 - Maestro Giovanni De Santis, founder of the Ente Luglio Musicale Trapanese reminds us in one of his writings - I had the idea of resuming, in my hometown, the events organized in the period 1932/1939 and giving them shape stable and organically defined. At that time I was in Milan and it was there that I did my best to collect the data necessary for this realization, with the help and advice of my friends who are experts in theatrical matters. When I came to Trapani, I turned to the Mayor prof. Received, to whom I extensively exposed my project and to whom I asked for consent for its realization. I obtained it with enthusiasm and he himself managed to form a Committee of which he assumed the presidency ”. Having found the necessary funds with personal obligations of its members, the illustrious fellow citizens Attilio Amodeo, Giuseppe Cosentino, Francesco Fontana, Alberto Manzo, Giacomo Pappalardo, Gustavo Ricevuto and Domenico Russo, the Committee itself promptly entrusted the company G. Virgilio to start the work for the construction of the theater, which were completed excellently and in record time, all under the direct supervision of Maestro De Santis himself, who years later wrote: "I was entrusted, without being part of the Committee, with artistic consultancy . I did not take on any administrative tasks, but the passion that I harbored, the interest, the enthusiasm and all the rest, did not let me remain with my hands: I came to be a warehouseman, a supervisor and also a worker. And all this because I love my city too much and because, for it, I am absolutely not afraid of any sacrifice ". Those who witnessed the dawn of the Musical July remember, in fact, Maestro De Santis intent on painstakingly gathering together, from wealthy citizens of Trapani, the money needed to replace the barbed wire that still surrounded the entire enclosure of the Villa, with iron panels. beaten (which are the current) and everything so that "his" July was perfect. Yes, “Luglio”, because this is how he called the fruit of his work, of his sacrifices: Luglio Musicale Trapanese. Since then, it was a succession of shows of the highest artistic stature, which have now become part of our collective memory of the city of Trapani, too. for the presence of internationally renowned singers who, over time, succeeded each other. (Andrea Mongelli, Virginia Zeani, Gino Bechi, Gianna Pederzini, Ettore Bastianini, Alvino Misciano, Piero Guelfi, Giacinto Prandelli, Plinio Clabassi, Cesare Valletti, Carlo Bergonzí, Ramon Vinay, Onelia Fineschi, Ferruccio Tagliavini, Anna Moffo, Gianni Poggi, Anna de 'Cavalieri, Mario Del Monaco.) That of the Luglio Musicale Trapanese, therefore, is a story full of resourcefulness, courage and pride but also the story of a visionary who, without money, in a few years, was able to transform the municipal villa of a provincial town in one of the most prestigious open-air theaters in Italy. The organizational structure of July, since 1948, has gradually transformed, becoming stable and autonomous, with its own employees possessing specific skills in the theatrical sector; the activity of the organization has also been developing, also embracing the winter months, which have contributed to the consolidation of “July” with its own autonomous scenography structures and inaugurating highly appealing prose seasons, inserted in the circuits of the national theater. Having become an institution in '58 and acquired legal personality in '92 (regional decree of March 28, 1992), "Luglio" was able to enter the sphere of international institutions operating in the opera house sector, carrying out a broad training activity music also in schools (“Teatro Scuola” and “Musica in Classe” projects) On 26 November 2003, with a decree from the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities, the July Musicale Trapanese was recognized as the “Theater of Tradition”.
