Opera in Piazza 2022 in Massa Marittima
The festival that takes place every summer in the churchyard of the Cathedral reaches its 35th edition, staging two masterpieces by Verdi, Otello and La traviata, and Mozart's Don Giovanni told by Moni Ovadia
One of the most anticipated musical events in Maremma is back again this summer, "Opera in the square", On stage from 3 to 5 August 2022 to Mass Maritime (Grosseto). The now historic opera event, which crosses the finish line of the 35. edition, takes place in a setting of great beauty, in the square facing the churchyard of the thirteenth-century Pisan Romanesque Cathedral which acts as a suggestive backdrop to the representations.

The exhibition is characterized by the originality of the set-ups, which combine the opera tradition with the use of multimedia technologies, new scenographies, special lighting effects, created specifically for staging in the particular architectural context of Massa.

"

The 2022 edition of Opera in the square will see renowned artists on stage such as Moni Ovadia and experienced singers such as Gianluca Zampieri, but it will also give space to young talents selected throughout Europe, thanks to the collaboration activated by Massa Marittima with the Ottavio Ziino International Opera Singing Competition.

I am three shows on the bill this year, two very famous works by Giuseppe Verdi, Othello (3 August), masterpiece of late maturity of the Busseto, e Traviata (5 August), seal of the so-called popular trilogy that consecrated the composer's fame. To intersperse the two Verdi works, on 4 August Moni Ovadia will tell another famous work, the Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. All the shows will start at 9.15 pm.

Opera in the square therefore opens on Wednesday August 3 With the'Othello of Giuseppe Verdi, for the first time on stage in Massa Marittima. As the protagonist, Gianluca Zampieri, a tenor with extensive international experience, while Jago will be played by Sergio Bologna and Desdemona from Francesca Romana Tiddi. Stefano Sorrentino will be Cassio, Irene Molinari, Emilia, Guido Bernoni, Roderigo; complete the cast Viktor Krastanov, Lodovico e Boris Dobrev, Montano. The direction is entrusted to Gianmaria Romagnoli, the symphony orchestra Europe Music it will be directed by the teacher Claudio Maria Micheli, while the Italian Opera Choir is prepared by Alessandro Di Adamo.

"This year we made an act of recklessness and great courage by tackling one of the most demanding and unattainable work from a technical point of view - underlines the artistic director of the exhibition. Renzo Renzi. - […] So, the first evening of Lirica in Piazza will be a great emotion not only for the public, but also for all of us who have accepted this challenge with enthusiasm ”.

The next night, Thursday August 4th, it will be the turn of "Moni Ovadia tells about Don Giovanni”, Event structured in the formula of the operatic recital. He will be the concertmaster Sergio La Stella to accompany the singers on the piano, in an evening that makes use of the special participation of Moni Ovadia  as a narrator. The vocal cast will see on stage Giulio Boschetti in the lead role of Don Giovanni, Mimma Brigands in the part of Donna Anna e Marianna Map in that of Donna Elvira, Federico Vita will be Don Ottavio, Viktor Krastanov, The Commendatore, Carlo Alberto Gioia will play Leporello, Sabrina Sanza, Zerlina, Eugenio Di Lieto will be Masetto. He takes care of the direction Gianmaria Romagnoli.

The show offers an interesting and particular reinterpretation of the work also for the younger public and less accustomed to operatic music. Many of the young talents who will take the stage have been selected by the Ottavio Ziino International Singing Competition which collaborates with Lirica in Piazza.

The 35th edition of Lirica in Piazza ends on Saturday 5th August with The traviata of Giuseppe Verdi, a title already proposed in 2015 and brought back to the stage by popular demand from the public.

The new staging uses the musical direction of the maestro from Massa Maurizio Morgantini, at the helm ofOrchestra Europa Musica, while signing the direction Christmas De Carolis, famous baritone who has trod the scenes of the most important theaters in the world, now also passed on the other side of the stage.

The protagonists of the evening will be the soprano Paola di Gregorio in the role of Violetta Valery and the tenor Giorgio Casciarri in those of Alfredo Germont. Giorgio Germont will be played by Alessio Potestio, Flora Bervoix from Mariam Gogochuri, Gastone from Guido Bernoni, Baron Douphol from Silvio Riccardi, The Marquis D'Obigny from Boris Dobrev; Dr. Grenvil from Viktor Krastanov; Annina from Giada D'Onofrio; Joseph from Paschal Faillaci.

The Opera in Piazza Festival was born in 1986 with the aim of enhancing, through a quality cultural event, the architectural backdrop represented by Piazza Garibaldi with the parvis of the thirteenth-century Cathedral of San Cerbone.

The event, which has never been interrupted, is organized by the Municipality of Massa Marittima and is produced by Europa Musica, under the artistic direction of maestro Renzo Renzi.
