The works on stage in the great Italian opera houses in February 2024
From the Scala in Milan to the San Carlo in Naples, from the Fenice in Venice to the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome. at the Massimo in Palermo... an overview of the shows not to be missed, from the most well-known masterpieces to rarities
From very popular titles to rarities not to be missed, the calendar of shows offered in recent weeks by the most important opera houses in the Bel Paese is truly rich: they are well 14 works proposed by the Italian Opera Foundations in February, between new productions and revivals of proven productions. With four titles each, the most represented composers are greens is Puccini, there are three stagings dedicated to Mozart, while the booklet is completed by a work by Rossini, one of Richard Strauss and a rare title of Arrigo Boito.

Giacomo Puccini, among the most represented composers at all latitudes, is further honored in centenary of the disappearance, this month at Venice, Verona, Rome is Palermo:

Two of the greatest and most beloved Puccini masterpieces, La Boheme is Madama Butterfly, will go on stage – taking up two proven productions – respectively at La Fenice Theater in Venice (2 – 10 February), director Stefano Ranzani, directed by Francesco Micheli, and al Massimo Theater of Palermo (16 – 24 February), director Omer Meir Wellber, directed by Nicola Berloffa.

The Rome Opera House instead proposes a new production, with the unprecedented combination of Gianni Schicchi, a one-act extrapolated from Puccini's triptych, to Ravel's L'heure espagnole; directed by Michele Mariotti, directed by the Berliner Ersan Mondtag (7 – 16 February).

To the Verona Philharmonic Theater there Arena Foundation stages a new staging of The swallow, a work that represents a unicum in the production of the composer from Lucca (18 – 25 February); on the podium Alvise Casellati, directed by Stefano Vizioli).

Four Verdi titles have been proposed in recent weeks, a Turin, Milan, Naples is Bologna:

Of absolute importance is the new production of A masquerade ball presented by Teatro Regio of Turin, who calls to the podium Riccardo Muti; the direction is signed by Andrea de Rosa, the show is on stage from 21 February to 3 March.

At the Milan staircase goes on stage Simon Boccanegra, also here in a new staging directed by Daniele Abbado, and musical direction by Lorenzo Viotti (1 – 24 February).

To the San Carlo Theater in Naples the last performances are scheduled Sicilian Vespers in the directorial reinterpretation of Emma Dante, Henrik Nánási on the podium (21 January – 3 February).

The Municipal Theater of Bologna – in the Comunale Noveau headquarters – presents the new production of The Troubadour which debuted last September at the Verdi Festival in Parma (18 – 25 February), conducted by Renato Palumbo, directed by Davide Livermore).

To listen to Mozart's masterpieces, the cities to mark in your diary for the month are Genoa it's still Milan is Naples:

The Carlo Felice Theater in Genoa brings to the stage, for the first time 243 years after its debut, Idomeneo, the work that consecrated the then twenty-five year old composer; directed by Riccardo Minasi, directed by Matthias Hartmann (16 – 25 February).

To the La Scala Theater in Milan come back The abduction from the menagerie – Die Entführung aus dem Serail in the now classic staging directed by George Strehler (reprised by Laura Galmarini), on this occasion entrusted to the musical direction of Thomas Guggeis (25 February – 10 March).

Mozart's masterpiece Don Giovanni will be staged at San Carlo Theater in Naples, which re-proposes the tried and tested show by Mario Martone; on the podium Constantin Trinks (16 – 27 February).

  • The other operas on stage in February, by Gioachino Rossini, Arrigo Boito, Richard Strauss  where and when

On the occasion of Carnival the La Fenice Theater in Venice presents one of his most loved productions, The Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini who returns in the colorful staging by Bepi Morassi; directed by Renato Palumbo (26 January – 13 February).

Instead, opt for a less popular work Verdi Theater of Trieste which he puts on the billboard Ariadne auf Naxos – Ariadne at Naxos, masterpiece by Richard Strauss; Enrico Calesso directs, Paul Curran's direction is taken up by Oscar Cecchi (16 – 25 February).

And we close our overview with the Opera Theater of Cagliari, which inaugurates the 2023 -24 Season with a new setup of the Nero of Arrigo Boito, 100 years after the first performance: an absolute rarity of national importance, which adds to the many Italian 20th century titles rediscovered by the meritorious Cagliaritana Foundation. On stage from 9 to 18 February, with the musical direction of Francesco Cilluffo and the direction of Fabio Ceresa.
