Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Choir of Milan Giuseppe Verdi
The Milan Symphony Orchestra Association, established in 1993, became a Foundation in 2002. The team, which has its headquarters in the Milan Auditorium, is today one of the most important symphonic realities at national and international level.

The Milan Symphony Orchestra (formerly 'laVerdi')

Founded in 1993 from Vladimir Delman, L'Milan Symphony Orchestra from the very beginning it has become a point of reference for the great symphonic repertoire in Milan and Lombardy. At the helm, from 1999 to today, three highly prestigious Music Directors: Riccardo Chailly (1999 - 2005), which led the team to establish itself as one of the most important national and international symphonic realities, Zhang Xian (2009 – 2016), the first female director to assume such a position in Italy, and subsequently Claus Peter Flor (2017 – 2022).

From the 1999 the Milan Symphony Orchestra has found its home of choice in theAuditorium of Milan.


The Orchestra has hosted some of the most illustrious sticks of the second half of the twentieth century, from Carlo Maria Giulini to Peter Maag, from Georges Prêtre to Vladimir Fedoseyev, Helmuth Rilling, Patrick Fournillier and Riccardo Muti. Among the great soloists protagonists of memorable concerts we remember Martha Argerich, Aldo Ceccato, Tibor Varga, Steven Isserlis, Lilya Zilberstein, Roberto Prosseda, Kolja Blacher and Yefim Bronfman.

In addition to the symphonic and concert activity a Milan and Lombardy, the Orchestra is often invited to prestigious halls in Italy and abroad: worth noting the tours in the main theaters of Switzerland with Roberto Abbado and in Italy with Wayne Marshall (2009/10), in Oman on the occasion of the inauguration of the Royal Opera House in Muscat (2011, director Patrick Fourniller), in Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg), directed by Jader Bignamini and with the participation of violinist Francesca Dego on the occasion of Banca Intesa San Paolo's 40th anniversary in Moscow. Also worth mentioning are the two concerts in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI in the Sala Nervi in the Vatican, the tour in Germany and the prestigious participation in the BBC Proms in 2013, the 20th anniversary of the Orchestra, the three concerts of the symphony orchestra at the Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg and the String Quartet in Kuwait (2016), the performance in St. Petersburg for the International Economic Forum and in France at the Festival de La Chaise-Dieu (2017), the acclaimed performances at the KKL in Lucerne (2018).

Among the great events hosted at the Auditorium in Milan, the extraordinary concert for the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy and for the anniversary of the Five Days of Milan, in the presence of the then President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano on March 20, 2011 with the direction of Jader Bignamini. Also noteworthy is the performance of Britten's War Requiem at the Teatro alla Scala on 11 September 2011 under the direction of Zhang Xian, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers.

Parallel to the concert activity the Orchestra has developed an intense record business, recording more than thirty records, ranging from the Verdi and Rossini repertoire to the great romantic and Russian symphonism.

In 2002, the Association is transformed into Foundation.

Since its inception, the main objective of the Foundation has been to promote the dissemination of music and musical culture and to form a new audience for the present and for the future, thanks to a heterogeneous programming that aims to attract a very varied audience, including those segments less accustomed to concert halls.

The concert activity is declined in the Symphonic Season main, which ranges from baroque music to contemporary repertoire and makes use of internationally renowned conductors and artists, and in the Thematic reviews, dedicated to particular musicians, anniversaries or genres. There are also numerous concerts that the Symphony Orchestra holds in Lombardy, other regions and abroad.

The concert programming is accompanied by numerous initiatives to develop a new relationship with the public, in particular i Educational projects aimed at both schools and the adult public.
