National Academy of Santa Cecilia Foundation Presenta

“ Concert Season 2023 – 24 ”
It opens with a spectacular homage to Rome Season 2023/24 ofNational Academy of Santa Cecilia: Thursday 12 October, with replicas the 13 and the 14, the great Hungarian director will take the podium Iván Fischer, who after 17 years returns to the helm ofOrchestra and Chorus of the Capitoline Foundation presenting the Roman trilogy of Ottorino Respighi.

On this special occasion he will be one of the major visual artists on the international scene, Yuri Ancarans, to combine the musical story with an evocative narration through images.

After describing Venice with the film Atlantis (in competition at the Venice Film Festival and nominated for the David di Donatello) giving a new, mysterious and hypnotic vision, far from stereotypes, Ancarani now turns his gaze on Rome. Inspired by Trilogy Respighiana, the film presents various "pictures" of the city, expressed in Ancarani's immersive and realist language. His works arise from a continuous mix of documentary, cinema and art and are the result of research aimed at exploring less visible regions of everyday life. .

The three symphonic poems of the Bolognese composer, The Fountains of Rome, The Pines of Rome (written specifically for the Cecilian orchestra) e Roman festivals will be interspersed with two compositions for a cappella choir by Franz Liszt, equally dedicated to the Eternal City (Or Roma Nobilis is From Alma Roma); the Academy Choir will be the protagonist, which will see the debut of its new maestro Andrew Dry.

The inaugural concert, created in collaboration with the Rome Film Festival, falls within Bridging Europe Festivals 2023, an event created ten years ago by Iván Fischer. Every year the event sees the collaboration of the Budapest Festival Orchestra with another European institution, and this year the musical bridge is precisely between Rome and Budapest.

The Roman Trilogy by Respighi

Composed in 1916-1917, The fountains of Rome they were performed at the Augusteo in Rome by the Cecilian Orchestra with Antonio Guarnieri on the podium. The four panels are dedicated to four different fountains in the city of Rome "portrayed" over the course of a day, from dawn to dusk (The Valle Giulia fountain at dawn; The Triton fountain in the morning; The Trevi Fountain at midday; The fountain of Villa Medici at sunset).

The poem The pines of Rome, also in four panels (The pines of Villa Borghese; Pine trees near a catacomb; The pines of the Janiculum; The pines of Via Appia), were performed in 1924 by the then principal director of the Santa Cecilia Orchestra and Choir, Bernardino Molinari. At the end of the first painting there were some demonstrations of dissent from the Roman public, but then the last lines of the work, as his wife Elsa reports in her memories, "were overwhelmed by frenetic applause such as had never been heard at the Augusteo". On 24 December of the same year the composer wrote to a friend of his: "[...] The pine trees of Rome have made their cones and nitpicks and had a triumphant success on the 14th of this month, so much so that, a unique case for the Augusteo, they are repeated on Sunday 28th by popular acclaim. I was very happy with this success...".

The poem closes the "Trilogy". Parties Roman, performed for the first time in 1929 at Carnegie Hall in New York by Arturo Toscanini, and further testimony to the sound virtuosity of the orchestrator Respighi who describes in music some celebrations in Rome: Circenses, in which Gregorian echoes evoke the ancient gladiators; The jubilee – a procession of pilgrims crossing medieval Rome; The Ottobrata, a beautiful sound description of a trip to the Roman Castles, and La Befana, in the last pages of which the orchestra unleashes itself in a passatello from which the famous motif “lassatece passa', semo romani” emerges.
