Pappano and Brunello between Shostakovich, Schumann and Beethoven
Stresa Music Weeks Association

Stresa Festival 2025 | 64th edition

“Every great orchestra is a living organism: it breathes, it remembers, it evolves.” So Antonio Pappano He has repeatedly described the London Symphony Orchestra, which will return to Stresa on September 6th to conclude the 64th edition of the Festival. The presence of a group that has shaped over a century of musical history is an event in itself, but the encounter with a program that combines the ironic lightness of Shostakovich, the poetic lyricism of Schumann, and the earthy power of Beethoven makes it the natural culmination of a festival that has successfully combined tradition and experimentation.

The concert will be held on Saturday 6 September 2025 at 8:00 pm at the Stresa Festival Hall, a modern structure overlooking Lake Maggiore and renowned for its acoustics. The space, capable of hosting large orchestras without sacrificing the intimacy of listening, becomes the ideal setting for an event that promises to be memorable.

The program engages with history in several directions. Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony, composed in 1945, is often considered a gesture of disguised dissent: rather than a celebratory monument to Soviet victory, the composer chose a chamber-like, almost mocking tone. Schumann's Cello Concerto, reinterpreted by Shostakovich with refined orchestration, straddles the boundary between romantic intimacy and symphonic drama. And finally, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, a true archetype of the "music of destiny," which for over two centuries has continued to embody the tension between individuality and collectivity.
