Teatro dell'Opera di Roma Foundation Presenta

"Season 2022 - 23"
A new production of La Bayadère, a true icon of classical ballet, will be staged at Rome Opera House from 24 February to 2 March 2023: Sara Benjamin Pech to sign the new choreographic version from Marius Petipa, in the staging that makes use of the scenes of Ignasi Montreal, of the costumes of Anna Biagiotti and some lights Vinicio Cheli. The score of Ludwig Minkus will be entrusted to the expert wand of Kevin Rhodes, on the podium ofRome Opera Orchestra.

Benjamin Pech, former étoile of the Paris Opéra, has had an extraordinary career which has seen him as the absolute interpreter of the major classical and contemporary roles on the most important stages in the world; after his farewell to the stage in 2016 he dedicated himself to artistic direction and choreography. For the Capitoline Ballet Corps, of which he was also Assistant Director, he has already created a successful edition of Swan Lake, and is now confronted with one of the most famous titles of the classical tradition.

Ignasi Montreal, born in Barcelona, is a multidisciplinary artist ranging from painting, digital art, design, murals, ceramics, animation and film. Mainly known for his collaborations with brands such as Gucci, Bulgari, Vogue, Four Seasons, Netflix, Airbnb and Adobe, for the Rome Opera House in 2021 he signed digital images and animations of Swan Lake at the Circus Maximus.

An extraordinary one cast of international guests joins the Roman dancers. Olga Smirnova, making his debut at the Costanzi, alternates with Maia Makhateli in the role of Nikija, the bayadere in love and secretly married to the warrior Solor, interpreted by Jacopo Tissi is Victor Caixeta.

So the dates: Nikija Olga Smirnova 25, 28 (20:00) / Rebecca Bianchi 26, 2 (11:00) / Marianna Suriano 24, 28 (11:00) / Maia Makhateli 1, 2 (20:00); Solor Jacopo Tissi 25, 28 (20:00) / Alessio Rezza 26, 2 (11:00), Claudio Cocino 24, 28 (11:00) / Victor Caixeta 1, 2 (20:00); Gamzatti Susanna Salvi 25, 28 (20:00), 1, 2 (20:00) / Alessandra Amato 24, 28 (11:00), flanked byOrchestra, the étoiles, the first dancers, the soloists and the Corps de ballet of the Rome Opera House, with the participation of the Students of the Dance School of the Rome Opera Theater directed by Eleonora Abbagnato.

Designed by Marius Petipa in 1877 in the style of the Grand ballet for the Imperial Russian Ballet in St. Petersburg, La Bayadère it is based on the Indian poem Sakuntala (from the drama of the Indian poet Kalidasa): a colorful melodrama with numerous intrigues of love, jealousy and betrayal, starring the beautiful bayadère Nikija, secret lover of the warrior prince Solor who, betraying her, will marry the cruel and jealous Gamzatti, the Raja's daughter . A weave that is consumed for the pleasure of the eyes with elegantly exotic and always sophisticated touches. Ludwig Minkus, then official composer at the Imperial Theaters, signed the music following the coloristic and descriptive line that was his own and which resulted in perfect harmony with the dancing action created by the choreographer.
