Other information of interest

Ultimate masterpiece by greens and third of his Shakespearean works, Falstaff represents a unique in his production: after setting dozens of tragedies to music, Verdi closes the parable with acomic opera, the only one written by him (with the exception of the juvenile fiasco of A day of reign). In a letter at the end of 1890 Verdi wrote: "I have wanted to write a comic opera for forty years, and I have known The merry wives of Windsor; well… the usual buts, who are everywhere, always opposed making this wish of mine satisfied. Now Boito has dissolved all the buts, and made me a lyrical comedy that is like no other. I enjoy making music from it […] The opera is completely comical!”.

The final fugue proclaims that «everything in the world is a joke», concluding the composer's career on a note as sumptuous as it is disenchanted gaiety. The opera premiered on February 9 1893 at the Ladder of Milan, enjoying triumphant success.

"I set the play in Shakespeare's period, in the sixteenth century, with costumes and scenes from that era - said the director Adrian Noble –. I made this choice because the age of Shakespeare is a bridge between the ancient Roman Catholic world and that of the Puritans who would have completely changed the country. Shakespeare is a bridge between two different eras as is Falstaff, a work in which primitive, medieval suggestions converge on the one hand (think of the witchcraft of the last act), on the other some of the elements of the Puritan culture, the prototype of which is perfectly represented by Ford who with his money and his possessions wants to control his wife and also his daughter's marriage future. This similarity makes me think I made the right directorial choice».

«For me Verdi is a real genius – commented the conductor Myung-Whun Chung –. But among the many wonderful things he has accomplished in his life, two stand out above all the others: first of all, Casa Verdi, the shelter for artists that he strongly wanted, financing it himself and asking all those who loved his music to help him. The second is precisely this Falstaff, because there he shows all his generosity. In Falstaff you don't just laugh: you are touched intimately, and then abandon yourself to a smile, because "everything in the world is a joke". Great artists often launch messages: just think of Beethoven's Ninth, which first of all expresses the concept that everyone must be brothers. And also in Falstaff the reference is to all humanity, including all of us. I repeat, together with the retirement home, Giuseppe Verdi reaches the maximum level of humanity with this opera».
